~even authors who don't mind fanfic don't ever talk about it, link to it, go on about how much they love the fanfic written for their work etc.~

Just keep in mind, some authors deliberately keep away from fanfic, not because they have anything against it, but because they don't want to have to worry about where their own inspiration/ideas come from down the line. But I can see an author in that position feeling like looking at a picture is much less risky.
