Is this secret really so hard to understand?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course fanart is considered more legitimate. That doesn't mean that it's more popular in fandom, only that it's more 'acceptable' outside of fandom. Authors who hate fanfic for their work usually have no problem with fanart. Authors often link to fanart for their work, but even authors who don't mind fanfic don't ever talk about it, link to it, go on about how much they love the fanfic written for their work etc. Nobody outside of fandom will give you funny looks if you say you draw pictures of your favourite characters, but most non-fandom-people think that fanfic is a weird waste of time and "you should just write your original stories". Not to mention the part where it's considered acceptable to take money for commissioned fanart, but nobody must ever make money from fanfic.

This. I have coworkers and friends who like fanart and even use it as desktops, but fanfic remains a strange incomprehensible beast.

...OHHHH. I didn't read the secret like that.

Yes, this makes more sense.

~even authors who don't mind fanfic don't ever talk about it, link to it, go on about how much they love the fanfic written for their work etc.~

Just keep in mind, some authors deliberately keep away from fanfic, not because they have anything against it, but because they don't want to have to worry about where their own inspiration/ideas come from down the line. But I can see an author in that position feeling like looking at a picture is much less risky.

Also can I point out, and I don't mean this in a bitter way, cause I'm really happy for them, but I have an acquaintance who's a rly good artist and big name that drew community fanart and has actually given it to the actors and got them posing with it. They think it's rly neat. If you honestly think I could do the same with fanfic and go "here Donald Glover I wrote you a story" you're on crack dude.

I actually want to show some actors crack fics written about their characters. Not the weird ones or the smutty ones, just the fun ones.

I wonder if they will take it well.
