That said, for all that the anime was weird, and that [somehow or another] the second season/series of it was done with vastly different designs [I think it was done by someone who didn't have the rights to the designs for some reason?], I was always said that the manga didn't pan out for some reason. It actually seemed to have it's shit together, and seemed darker [and a bit grittier] than the anime was.

Of course, I haven't seen/read any of it in years so I could be completely wrong about all that.

The mangaka who did the artbook/manga and the overall character design had a bit of a falling out with the people in charge, some legal issues, I think. That's why the design was changed.
