omg weiss kreuz!! the first anime i ever watched all these years ago. :') i don't even remember enough of it to comment anything sensible. they were assassins that had a flower shop?? the red haired one (aya???) shouted "shine" a lot... um.

Weiss Kreuz.

Weiss Kreuz. Also known as Knight Hunters in the US, I believe. It's really not a great anime taken by itself (the art style, for instance, is terrible) but the characters are fun and because of that, somehow, the anime developed a loyal and surprisingly long-lasting fanbase.

And as much as I absolutely adore the show, I'm afraid I have to disagree on the plot. The main four, the ones in that picture, are assassins by night, working for a secretive agency to fight the forces of evil (who all have superpowers somehow but none of the good guys do, unless you count ignoring logic as a superpower). By day, they are... florists.

The show was developed as a vehicle for the four main seiyuu, who were/are all big names, so it's kind of understandable when the art and plot fall to the wayside behind the characters, but it's still worth watching, imo. Especially so if you can watch it with friends while doing some version of the Weiss Kreuz Drinking Game.

I'm kind of happy that there is a secret for this. Less than a week ago, I decided to revisit my old, old fandoms from years ago, this being one of the very first. I found a fic I really love again and I still like it and right now, I'm on such an incredible nostalgia-trip it's not even funny anymore XD

What I noticed:

I really want a shiny, slightly grittier reboot of this anime. Because I really think that it has great potential. Not exactly for becoming the most deep and perfect anime ever, but it could have been really cool had the anime not been so incredibly... bad. That's the main reason I can only ever stay in the fandom and read the artbook-manga thing: I couldn't bear to watch this horrible anime again. It was. So. Bad. It didn't have to, though. That's a pity.
A lot of the series and the franchise in general was so silly, especially those stupid German names for everything.
But a reboot in the style/quality of, say Darker than Black? I'd watch it in a heartbeat.

At least around my corner of things people disliked it because it had a lot of potential and did not have the creative juices and/or budget to see that potential through.

Also, two words: scribble fire.

It's still good in a very cheesy, very b-movie, expect-it-to-be-bad-and-laugh-inappropriately way.

See, when I'm not watching this show (it's been a couple years, now) I can think over all the flaws, and I recognize how inconsistent the art was, and how silly parts of the plot are (though I agree; it's not really worse than a lot of other silly plot elements that other series have) and all... but when I'm watching it again, I remember why it is THE BEST THING EVER. I enjoy the whole thing SO MUCH.

I think that some other comments were right on... the silly weird bits (the art being inconsistent, the tone of the series changing episode to episode, and whatnot else bothers people more with this series because it had more potential than it realized.

Because that show's plot wasn't "nutty" or "weird." It was lazy bad writing. They didn't even try to come up with a decent, non-cliche story that wasn't a ripoff of every other anime that came before. The creator was a voice actor/singer who dressed as the main character so I wouldn't be surprised if he thought just putting 4 pretty boys together, giving them a legion of fangirls and badass secret identities was enough to make a show.

...if I'm recalling correctly that is exactly how the show came to be? That the Weiss project started out as Koyasu gathering all his seiyuu buddies and they formed the band first, and the anime came after because he was like "hey guys you know what would be cool? If we were ASSASSINS!"

This! There are so many stranger premises out there. Weiss was fun on some level anyway, so why all the harping on the flaws? It makes people look like they're ashamed of liking it.

I freaking loved this, I wasn't aware that people disliked it? Then again, I avoid fandoms because the people in them scare me. I watched for me and me alone. Got really attached to these guys, too. Even the newer series (which is now probably considered old).

Some people make fun of it because they used to love it and it can be embarrassing when something you love turns out to be really bad. I watched a couple of episodes of Weiss Kreuz Gluhen recently, and realized that aside from the low-budget animation, it wasn't any worse than the average supernatural/action anime.

I remember finding all the branching storylines pretty confusing at times, but I kept watching it. It felt like it was really more about the boys' dynamics then any sort of plot.

I have so much nostalgia for that show, so much. I know it's ridiculous most of the time, but something about it made me love it in all its ridiculousness. People have no right to complain about Weiss Kreuz, 90% of anime is made up of stupid half-assed premises.

That said, for all that the anime was weird, and that [somehow or another] the second season/series of it was done with vastly different designs [I think it was done by someone who didn't have the rights to the designs for some reason?], I was always said that the manga didn't pan out for some reason. It actually seemed to have it's shit together, and seemed darker [and a bit grittier] than the anime was.

Of course, I haven't seen/read any of it in years so I could be completely wrong about all that.
