I think maybe Planetes is in the same boat as Monster... the actual story is so perfect, so open-and-shut, that there's not much room for easy creation of fanworks - most animu/manga fans I've met like both, but dont' feel the urge to expand on those universes...

But oh man Planetes manga so good unf

I have no idea about the fandom in question but I agree on the Monster front so if they are in the same boat then IAWTC completely

Yeah I agree! I loveloveLOVE both Planetes and Monster (Monster a little bit more though, since Planetes doesn't have sexy Dr. Tenma, ohoho), but there isn't really much to expand upon. Also slashing anything in either just makes me feel disgusted. :)

WHY DO PEOPLE DO THAT the canon is so strong and dkfjgnfgn ): they destroy it with a bulldozer and then auuugh. I stay away from the Monster fandom because of this.

Well nothing is unslashable to some people, haha. I do think Johan is hot, and Dr. Tenma is even hotter, but mmm them two together just makes me go ಠ_ಠ

There's a Monster fandom? (I mean, an active fanwork-producing community)

Slash wouldn't bother me; I'm just not interested in exploring that particular world outside of canon. *shrug*

Planetes, though, I'd love to read a technical journal or a fic about a really really minor character - maybe Hachi's brother, or one of Tanabe's former coworkers, provided it was well-written.

OP here.

I could not agree with you more. The story is complete. Everything that I wanted to see happen, happened. It was so satisfying.

Tell me more of this "Monster."

It's only the BEST STORY EVER!!! :) Naoki Urasawa is a superb storyteller, it's like reading an illustrated murder mystery thriller that you can't put downnnn. It's been licensed by VIZ, but I don't know if they're doing it justice. I do know Naoki himself forced them to keep the cover designs the same as the Japanese, so maybe he's somehow forcing them to keep up translation quality and not censor things as they are so apt to do. If you do a bit of looking, I'm sure you'll find the torrent for all 18 volumes done by mangascreener.com.

It's FANTASTIC. 9 volumes (maybe 10) are out in English through Viz, and their translation is excellent.

It's a suspense/character drama/detective story about... well, this brilliant neurosurgeon, Dr. Tenma, is suspected of a string of murders he didn't commit, but there's so much more to it than that. Also, the setting is neat: Germany (primarily Dusseldorf and Koln so far) both before and after the fall of the Berlin wall.

Ghaaaaaah, it's so good. I just picked up vol. 7. Dr Tenma barely shows up at all, but it remains as compelling as ever.

Urasawa's a brilliant manga artist, too - one of the few in the industry who understands that OMG, facial structures vary from person to person!

OK, I'll stop fangirling now.
