Yeah. The squeeing fangirls on tumblr who are all like "LOOK HE LOOKED AT HIM IN ONE GIF OMG TV BOYFRANS ALL WOMEN CAN SUCK IT FOREVER" really grate me too.

Why is everyone so intent on making Sherlock ~sentimental~ and ~romantic~? God, grates on me. I like Sherlock the way he is, but all I ever see in fic from most "Johnlock" shippers is Sherlock becoming normalized and romantic and wonderful and ugh. I JUST WANT SHERLOCK TO BE A CRAZY, MISUNDERSTOOD, KINKY MAD SCIENTIST, OK?

. . .I have a lot of feelings about sentimentalizing Sherlock.

omg they made eye contact it's totes true loooove!

You get that in every fandom but I'll admit to seeing it all over the fucking place with Sherlock.

I won't deny that the pairing has a lot of chemistry (because it does) but it's just the way that fans go about playing with and dissecting that chemistry is really annoying. They use it to bash women, and they use it to normalize Sherlock, and those things are both things I am very much not ok with. I mean, the latter a little bit I am ok with, but many people are like "omg he luvs john so much that now he wants to no longer do cases in favor of having ALL TEH SEX and then they have mpreg and babbies". Ugh. I just wonder if people are watching the same show as me sometimes. . .

Agreed. And I hate the women-bashing the most, since I can never escape from it, no matter what mid or large-sized fandom I go to.

You're both totes right, shipping slash and not writing het or female characters means automatic sexism, probably

You mean the guy who become so depressed he stopped eating when he thought a woman he'd met once had died? The guy who "killed himself" to save three other people? You're wondering why people would ever think a guy like that could be sentimental?

Yeah, overly-sentimental, shmoopy fics can be grating, but to ignore that Sherlock has some sentiment is ignoring things we've actually seen in canon.

I didn't say I never wanted him to be sentimental, I'm just tired of him being overly so in ooc ways

Ok. I didn't realize the "~" around "sentimental" were supposed to be a modifier.

Sorry I didn't make that clear

That's ok. (-:

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this! This is what I mean. I'm not saying fans can't have a bit of a squee over their favorite ship, but there is just so much<\i> of this sentimentalizing used to take away the main interesting points of his character or to just hate on the female characters. Of course there are times when Sherlock has overarching moments of sentiment, but that doesn't automatically mean every single action is driven by some intents to get John to fall in love with him or get him to break up with his girlfriends. It's just really rather a horrible thing to do to his character.

Damn. That's what I get for trying to write HTML code on my phone.

Yo complaining about bad, OOC!Sherlock fic is one thing but don't make generalizations about how all or most shippers feel this way. In big fandoms it's just harder to find the good stuff, honestly

Sorry, when I say 'everyone' I don't mean literally everyone. I just mean a lot of people; I see this kind of thing on tumblr tons. I don't even mean that the gooey stuff is bad necessarily. I just wish there was more variety of interpretation, and I don't really like militant shipping.
