I mean, I don't have any problem with Tumblr at all. I've met tons of fantastic fandom friends there. Yes, it takes some getting used to and yes there are some very annoying aspects to it, but how is that different from the cliquey, wanky nonsense on LJ? If anything, I think tumblr opened fandom up for a lot of people that felt alienated on other platforms.
Of course, this would depend entirely on which fandom you happen to be a part of.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)That sometimes ends up getting me very frustrated with fandom, when people run around accusing the showrunners of random things because they don't like the choice in casting or how there is yet another love interest (and clearly that means the author is a misogynist...).
But that's about the only thing I personally can come up with :)

But then some friends who follow OTHER fandoms will reblog arguments with bona fide certified "DIE CIS SCUMMMMMMM" Generals Of The War Against Everything Ever, and I realize, no, they exist, some fandoms are just fucking lucky.

But since people have been migrating to Tumblr I feel that discussion has dwindled to nothing but reblogging squee. There used to be so many episode discussions, meta, fic rec and discussions, and now there's barely anything. And I partly blame that on Tumblr. I'm not saying fandom was this glowing perfect community of wonder, but I just feel like there's very little actual content and community unless you're into reblogging and hashtags.
So I guess you could argue that fandom hasn't died, just changed. But for me, who doesn't use Tumblr all that much, it's pretty much dead.

I've had a completely opposite experience from you on this. Tumblr's been filled with great meta on issues (I'm in comics fandom, maybe that has an effect? I don't know.), on character interactions and relationships (both shippy and not shippy), character history, comparisons between canon (616 vs. Ultimates vs. Movie-verse is a very popular topic right now and who's pulling from where etc), commentaries on any detail you can imagine. And discussions (through all those blasted reblogs) on panels, issues, characters etc. If anything my fandom has been far more active in this sense than it was before.
Obviously, this won't go for every fandom or every person on the site. There is a lot of random id release and squeeing and reblogging without comment but that thoughtless, mindless squee existed long before tumblr. It just got a home there
Now, finding the good stuff can be tricky, of course. I was lucky and had a few friends already there doing more than simply keymashing and they helped. But I've found many great fandom friends through the tags (character name tags can be scary but there are diamonds to be found!)
It just seems counterproductive to me to say "this place sucks" if one isn't using it or isn't posting the things they want to see in fandom on that site. Things won't shift at all if everyone just crosses their arms and frowns at it.
tl;dr There's good and bad on every site.

I honestly have never seen a post on Tumblr that contained much streamlined discussion. It's all hashtags and quoting and posts as replies. But maybe I just didn't explore enough.
I'm glad that you're enjoying the move to Tumblr. I'm not saying Tumblr is evil or there's no joy in it, I'm just saying that from my perspective if you don't like the style and format of Tumblr then fandom is pretty much dead (compared to what it used to be).

I haven't run into much of the hashtags conversation... most of it comes to me in a thread format, much like this... could be a difference in reading style there.
I know fandom on LJ and DW has slowed down considerably, but I have to wonder if eventually the shine won't wear off and tumblr will be like every other site with a heavy fandom contingent. There is a novelty factor here too.

...
HOW? Seriously, how in the hell are you seeing coherent, threaded conversations on Tumblr? Because that has never happened to me there, and if I could follow things that way I'd actually use the damn site, so ... how?
Please?

And I've heard conflicting things, too. Like, I've seen people say that people will reblog stuff and add their own commentary. But a while back, someone told me that I shouldn't add my own commentary if I reblog something, because that looks stupid to people. If I want to comment on what I'm reblogging, I'm "supposed" to use the tags.
But I don't want to comment on stuff using tags. #i don't want #to communicate #like this #when there's a text box #and i can just use that #ARGH
I just don't get it. I like Tumblr all right, and I do enjoy the gifs and images, but I wish I knew how I was supposed to use it.
