wow I didn't realize I had so much stuff

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
In elementary school, one of my classmates stole my bff's beloved colored pencils and hid them in my backpack to make my bff think I had done it. She fell for the trick and was angry with me for weeks. Eventually she "forgave me", but I never trusted her again. The friendship didn't last for too long after that. I was a very awkward kid back then, and she was the only person I really hung out with, so this shattered me very bad and I don't think I have quite gotten over the trust issues it gave me. (I have much better friends now, though. c:)

I hate when parents don't teach their children to respect things that don't belong to them. D: My parents drilled that in my head, and while I was clumsy and did damage stuff on accident when I tripped and stuff, I didn't go around touching and grabbing things that weren't mine. That's just disrespectful.

(I was once sweet-talked by a girl that, in retrospect, I totally had a crush on, to steal a bracelet from another girl and I blamed the sort of class bully for it and she got in trouble and I never told anyone and oh shit this shit haunts me okay. It was a very cheap thing that was very easy to replace, like, worth half a buck, which is the only consolation I had.)

I once had the friend of a friend visit me and grab all my things (she didn't steal anything, she just looked at them and put them back where they were), but that bothered me so much and I didn't say anything for fear of offending her.

I used to lend things to my classmates and they thought I was super nice and stuff, but after having one too many markers/colored pencils/erasers etc. not returned (I once caught one of my "friends" with my permanent marker in her stuff and I couldn't call her out on it because it was a common brand and I couldn't prove it was mine), so I stopped lending stuff.

Suddenly I wasn't so beloved and I even had someone write "bitch" with a pen on my pencil case. I erased it very easily, but, damn, what the hell.

I also found out that people gossiped terrible things behind my back, but at least I apparently had people defending me? vOv

I also hated when people didn't respect my personal space, like classmates that were too touch-y feel-y and got angry when I told him to please stop leaning in so close to me. He also one time dug and dug into the small tear of one of my sneakers until it broke completely and I don't have the money to repair them. >:( They're otherwise in an okay condition but now I can't wear them. This classmate also ruined the zipper in the clothes of another friend. HE WAS FUCKING SEVENTEEN NOT A CHILD WTF.

Oh man all this talk of stationery reminds me: when I was about ten there was a stationery thief in my school. She (and I say she because I am 90% sure I know exactly who it was) used to mostly steal gel pens, but she also took a set of mini erasers I had. I never got the damn thing back. D< I tried to hard to find out where it had got to but no luck.

And here's the weird part, and the part that makes me so sure I know who took it: one of the girls in my class, E, confided in me that she knew the thief was another girl, R. I think maybe she wanted me to back her up when she went to a teacher, but I really liked R so I didn't want to believe her. Then a while after all my ranting about my mini erasers, R came into school with another set and told me she'd 'found mine'. I told her that it was not my set as it was a different colour, and it was also brand new. She insisted that it was mine, and when I insisted that it was not, she said she would hand it in to a teacher.

So yeah, R totally took my erasers, realised I was actually very attached to them, felt bad, and tried to replace them. No idea what happened to the original set.

I'm not sure whether I feel bad for not turning her in or not - she was almost certainly the thief and she caused a whole lot of trouble, but I kind of get it? Gel pens and pretty stationery in general was a huge status thing at my school, and from what I know of her home life and her family, it was pretty clear even at the time that she just didn't have the resources. I think even when I was that young I kind of saw her as a victim of our ridiculous materialism.

ayrt

Aw, that really is sad. :(

I think that the fact she tried to replace it when she saw how much it hurt you lose the set speaks well of her.

I mean, it doesn't excuse the fact that she went on a thieving spree, but I can't say I'm unsympathetic to her given the context.

Yeah, pretty colorful items were kind of a big deal back then and could earn you attention and "friends", or at least a little respect, so I can see the desperation.

I could be wrong about the circumstances behind the replacement erasers but I can't think of any other explanation that makes sense - if it wasn't her then why didn't she just say 'here, I bought you another set'? xD On the plus side I think I did eventually find somewhere else that sold those erasers and got a new set so there was that.

Yeahhh. I totally understand the desperation - even if it wasn't her, I feel bad for whoever stole all those gel pens. There's something so pathetically sad about risking getting into that much shit (I mean they were searching people's bags for stolen gel pens, they would have searched lockers if we had them) over some pretty-coloured pens.

Oh god, I was a kid who stole stuff. I'm so sorry.

The worst thing I did was steal these tickets the teacher gave out for good work hat you could turn in at the end of the year for a prize. I was always out sick and had way less than anyone in the class. So since I had to stay later while waiting for my Mom, I would sneak into the empty classroom and take a few tickets from whoever was stupid enough not to take them home. Then of course I found myself in deep shit when I couldn't explain how I had so many, but for someone reason I was never called out for it. Some of the girls I stole from used to count their tickets loudly in front of each other and knew exactly how many they had.

God it's been years and I feel so bad about doing that.
