When I was 2nd grade I HATED doing math problems, not because I couldn't, but because it was boring. My mom promised me that for every problem I solved and got correct on the first try, she'd give me a quarter. She didn't pay me, but told me she'd 'do it next time'. She used this excuse every time I did a math sheet, but she never did pay me.

She also CONSTANTLY told my older brother things I had told her that she had promised not to tell. When I was 12 I warned her that this was the last time I would hold her in confidence if she broke her promise again. Not even five minutes later my brother got home from work, and the first thing she did was tell him what she'd promised not to say.

And she wonders why I don't talk to her anymore.

My mom is very big on 'passive aggressive parenting'. Another gripe I have with her involves her therapist: she has her appointments over the phone, and loves to twist around things she dragged me to do (going to the mall, a store, etc) to make her seem like a better parent ('oh, made_of_tin wanted to go 'Store Name' SO BAD' but SHE dragged ME to go there 'because I'm your mother and you have to do what I say'). After I started interrupting her phone conversations to point out how many times she blamed me (with an added 'lying is wrong!' in a sing-song voice) she finally took her appointments in her room.

It didn't stop it, but at least I didn't have to listen to it, so.

I'm sorry. :( It might not be physical abuse or yelling, but this thing is so long term and so insidious that I can't not see it as a type of psychological abuse.

I hope she can work through her issues some day.

I have no idea! I barely remember anything I asked her to keep secret, only that I did. She's made the argument that it 'didn't matter' she didn't keep the secret because it wasn't anything 'really important' (with the undertone being 'if it was REALLY important I'd totally keep it secret'...except she's shown as well she can't hold to THAT either). I just keep stressing to her it didn't MATTER that it wasn't 'important' she kept the secret; it was that I asked her in confidence and she turned around and willfully broke that confidence anyway.
