Help a new fan out?

[personal profile] enjoythesilence 2012-08-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually just finished watching Sherlock via Netflix and I am in love (both with the show and with John/Sherlock). I've just sort of divorced myself (for lack of a better term) from the SPN fandom and would like to avoid The Crazy as much as I can. I'd really hate to be driven out of this story after it's taken me so long to find something else I'm this passionate about.

Would anyone be so kind as to point me towards some places that are fun and active with a limited amount of crazy?

Any other tips are welcome, of course.

Define "The Crazy"? Are you really going to let someone else's enthusiasm ruin your enjoyment? Baffling. Don't read what you don't like. Don't interact with people you don't like. Watch the show often, bask in its glory, and enjoy it on your own terms --and let everyone else do the same thing. "Crazy" fans will be everywhere because there will always be people who are enjoying themselves in a way you won't personally like.

Check the Sherlock communities here on LJ and see if any of them have what you want. I'm thinking you have an aversion to shipping/people being enthusiastic about their shipping (this is what I think you mean by "The Crazy", but feel free to correct me), so be aware that a huge majority of the fandom ships Sherlock/John and we do it hard and we're not sorry for it. There are lots of other ships though that are just as active so look for those. If you want a discussion post but can't find one, then start one. Despite the ridiculous assumptions, the fans are intelligent, well-spoken thoughtful people who love Sherlock Holmes in all his incarnations and will be more than happy to participate in discussions.

The only "tip" is live and let live and enjoy yourself.

Actually, I am a Sherlock/John shipper! It's my favorite part of the series. The thing is that I see Sherlock as asexual (as in truly asexual, not the "asexual until John's magical Peen heals him of this affliction") so that narrows down the field for me quite a bit in terms of fic and fans to squee with. But generally, by "The Crazy", I am referring to those who take it above and beyond to the point of hating on other characters who can come between the ship and those who see things that aren't even really there. A good example of that last one is the scene by the pool where Moriarty says they both know Sherlock has some kind of heart. People said Sherlock glanced over at John at that moment. No, he didn't. o.O

You're right and I do agree with you for the most part about it being up to me ultimately. That could have just been a bad first experience and I would gladly eat my words if proven wrong.

Aha the worst one I've seen is this screencap, I think from Baskerville(not sure, I do. Watch the episodes obsessively so...), of Sherlock handing John a business card, and people going on about how Sherlock is reaching out to John. How much he needs to just touch him and feel him there with him because he feels so fragile without John's stabilizing presence.

Yeah, no. He was handing him a card. Holy shit people.

WTF? Really? See, now it's THAT kind of crazy I'm talking about. The relationship between the two men is beautiful and epic. They reach out to each other in their loneliness. All of that can still be true without every gesture they make or word they say have some sort of ~deeper meaning.

It doesn't narrow the field, I assure you. Plenty of folks write and see Sherlock as asexual. It's not an obscure thing. There are tons of fanworks out there that deal with it from fluff to angst and all in between. Ask for fic recs in communities. People will be more than happy to help you out.

I still don't understand how those people enjoying themselves in any way negatively affects you. Okay, so some people are too immature to handle the thought of other characters getting in the way of their ship- what does it matter to you? They'll grow up and learn from it eventually and most likely look back on their "I hate X cause they're ruining Z/Y!" with some embarrassment and a bit of wisdom. And okay, some people get a little delusional and want to see things that aren't there (like Sherlock glancing at John)... so what? Who cares? Shrug and move on. No one's forcing you to take part in that. You really can just roll your eyes and scroll right past it.

I assure you, there are so many wonderfully talented people in this fandom who are also kind, intelligent, hilarious, and fun. This fandom in particular is one of the funniest I've ever been in. It's a lovely place.

All this Sherlock talk is making me want to watch the show and get back to my reading of the books. I wonder if I can do both at the same time...

da

Isn't this person doing what you're suggesting already, though? Not complaining about being "forced" to participate, but asking for places that they can interact with the fandom in the way they prefer. It's...what you're telling them to do, except they're acting for specifics for the "lovely places" you or others might know of.

Like okay I get what you're saying about not looking down on people for having too much fun or whatever but this person isn't coming across as scoffing and dismissive to me at all

*asking for specifics, oops

ayrt

No, I was responding to their comment about "the crazy" and how that must somehow impact their enjoyment of fandom (they directly said they left a previous fandom because of it).

Re: Help a new fan out?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but if the way the fandom works is not enjoyable to you it's still a perfectly logical train of thought to divorce yourself from that fandom. Yes, actually, other fans can impact a person's willingness to interact with those specific fans. That's not inherently a bad thing. It's a personality/preference thing. It's one thing to say you can't enjoy a show anymore because of the fandom, but to say "I can't enjoy this fandom because of this fandom" seems pretty natural.

I'm mostly just baffled by your "no one is forcing you" bit because yes, yes that is exactly the point

"Define "The Crazy"? Are you really going to let someone else's enthusiasm ruin your enjoyment?"

Enthusiasm? ENTHUSIASM?

Tell me if this is "enthusiasm:" there are two main pairings in a fandom. You are devoted to one of them. You and your fellows passionately hate everyone who is devoted to the other one, so you send DEATH THREATS to the BNFs on that side and TRY TO GET ANY WEBSITES ASSOCIATED WITH THAT SIDE TAKEN DOWN, going so far as to hack some of them (yes, this actually happened in the first fandom in which I was involved).

You really gonna sit there and tell me that everyone should have just thrown up their hands and said, "oh well, they're just enjoying the show in their own way, hyuk hyuk"?

There actually is legitimately crazy shit that people out there do. So fuck off with your snide platitudes.

If you like fic, try The Holmes News:

http://holmesian-news.livejournal.com/

It's a (sort of) daily digest of fic, art, articles, etc. It's not a discussion community, but it gets you straight to the fanworks without having to pass through any potentially crazy areas. Sometimes discussion threads on other comms/journals are linked, too. I like it because it includes stuff outside of LJ, like fic on AO3, news articles, etc.

The comm covers all versions of Sherlock Holmes, not just Sherlock, but the version, major characters and/or pairings, and rating are listed for each story so you have at least a little idea of what you are getting into before you click the link.
