Re: childhood things you've still kept

This thread is making me feel weird because the only thing I've kept is my teddy bear, Muzzy. I usually toss stuff every three months. My only concession is to scan artwork into my computer so my mother doesn't go digging through the trash.

I like having a neat, minimalist environment. Except for on the internet, here I hoard everything.

I'm the complete opposite, when I clean my desk it ends up completely covered with things within a week^^"

My mother would keep everything, a single baby sock because she might find the other and then her someday grandkids could use it, an entire magazine because one picture in it made her smile, etc. So I was in the habit of sneaking items out to the trash to keep from being overwhelmed and now throwing things away gives me a gleeful little thrill. It's very freeing to look around and think "I could be out of here in less than thirty minutes".

^yeah this, my father was a hoarder too and we sometimes used to stage clearouts when he wasn't around. In his later years he took to hoarding packaging and other broken things/trash. After he died my brother had to clear out the house, and he filled ten dumpsters full of useless shit no one in the family could use.

Please don't feel weird; feel normal. I am genuinely worried for some of the people on this thread...no sorry I don't find their untreated mental disorder cute :/ Like you, I just have the one old teddybear from when I was a baby, but that's after three separate long-distance moves, so I might have had more if I'd not strayed so far from my childhood home.

I prefer the minimal look too*. I hoarded things when I was younger so I had a small collection (poor = not that much stuff). I felt really bad when I got rid of a lot of things for minimilism and cleanliness sakes.

But now I'm just really careful about my purchases because I assume the majority will stay with me for life so I always think about it in the longterm. Like, if I own a house can this go in the dining room? With the end plan in mind being a not-cluttered house

*This does not and will never apply to books.

Honestly if I didn't have parents that have space in their house for my boxes of childhood crap I wouldn't keep it. Mostly it's all in storage. The stuff I have now is very minimal, as I like the idea that if I needed to I could shove everything important in my car and take off.
