childhood things you've still kept

[personal profile] cashay 2012-08-04 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What stuff of your childhood & school days do you still have that you should probably throw away but can't.

(Yes, I'm cleaning out my flat and I think I have the potential to be a hoarder, I just can't throw anything away.)

MY BARBIES. Oh god. I know there is no reason whatsoever for me to keep them, but I just can't. I finally got past my Beanie Babies a year ago (I'm still sad I got rid of them), but I haven't worked my way up to the Barbie dolls yet. Hnngh.

Also, I have a ragdoll and a baby blanket that I still sleep with (I'm 25; woohoo!) They're pretty gross and embarrassing, but it's a comfort thing.

Hey, I still sleep with a stuffed cat. I just like to have my arms around something when I sleep and pillows are too big.

I lost my Barbies. :( They got cleared out of the garage, left outside by accident for a few weeks, and destroyed in the rain. *still mourning them a little*

I still have my comfort blanket too! I don't sleep with it any more, it just live sin a drawer now, but I've never parting with that thing. xD

EVERYTHING. God I have a lot of crap. Most of it is in my parents attic, so that's handy.

ngggh I moved to another continent and had to give away

-my beloved blanket
-my super awesome toy figurines (one was a pink and blue dragon that came in a castle toy set and it was awesome)
-my barbies
-my books
-a lot of stuff basically

and then, after giving it all the things I could bear away, my parents decided that they would be shipping stuff over and we had space left over and oh ho ho wait, what is that, anon? ...oh right we told you to get rid of all the stuff you could, didn't we, well, whoops

>:(

my family is kinds hoardish and I have so much stuff I don't know how to get rid of because IT MIGHT BE USEFUL ONE DAY WHAT IF I REGRET THROWING IT AWAY.

I have regretted throwing some stuff away, but I want to have less things and oh god what is this first world problems orz

My favorite barbies.

My ancient 1970s Dream House which is in the shed.

The best of my stuffed animals.

Most of my books.

A few of the dresses I wore when I gave piano recitals.

Of course, then I hit twenty and thought "I still want dolls!" So now my room is covered in Monster High dolls and Barbies and fairies and all that kind of sparkly little girl stuff.

But now I get to say I'm a collector. XD

I still have the stuffed animal (a kind of anthropomorphized dog) that my parents gave me for my first birthday. I'm 32 now and he still sleeps in my bed ;)

SO many old books. I still have the (shitty little paperback Canadian editions of) Harry Potter books 1 & 2 that my grandma gave me for my ninth birthday even though the glue has disintegrated and half the pages are falling off the binding and they're stuck together with masking tape. But I grew up reading those exact physical copies, and damned if I'm gonna read any other copies for as long as these ones are readable. Even if a decade of reading American english means I now blink whenever "Defense" is spelled "Defence".

My Bear Bear and homemade quilt are here to stay. They came to college with me and they're going farther.

Plus I'm also keeping my Gameboy Color and related games. Started a new game of Pokemon Red recently.

When I moved out, I has to go through everything, and it was surprising how much stuff I'd accumulated!

That said, I reluctantly pruned through everything and only kept stuffed animals and childhood books that had sentimental value (I received a lot of inscribed books from my grandparents in England, so I couldn't part with those), my collector (boxed, special edition) Barbies, and knick knacks again that had sentimental value, so that I didn't end up with 300 boxes of dust collectors. XD

This thread is making me feel weird because the only thing I've kept is my teddy bear, Muzzy. I usually toss stuff every three months. My only concession is to scan artwork into my computer so my mother doesn't go digging through the trash.

I like having a neat, minimalist environment. Except for on the internet, here I hoard everything.

Pretty much everything - I can't throw things away either! All my books, pretty much all my toys... the main thing I should probably part with is a ridiculous amount of bits of paper covered in doodles from school. And allll my old exercise books.

I worry I may have the potential to be a hoarder too. :/ I have a relative (thankfully not a blood relative) with a serious hoarding problem and it's scary shit.

Two stuffed animals - a ragdoll kind of... dog thing that's lost the ears and nose. I got it when I was ten minutes old. And another stuffed dog that I got for my first birthday.

And two school notebooks from fifth grade, plus my portfolios for fifth and sixth grade. My Mum also has a portfolio for a farmyard unit I did in first grade. Plus, all my report cards.

So mostly school things, aside from those two stuffed animals.

I only have a few of my books and a blanket that my grandfather gave me when I was four. The rest of it was moved without my knowledge/permission to the basement while I was away one summer, and destroyed in a mouse infestation and subsequent flood. All my yearbooks, all my music, all my photos of and letters from friends that had moved away, all my treasured toys, stories and artwork... everything, gone.

Books, a special pebble I used to think had precious quartz inside of it, and this box I made in shop class from junior high. It holds the diary pages I kept as a kid.

Also this "hope" box I made back when I was this tiny hardcore Christian of sorts. It's got. Doodads? I'm not sure what to call them, since they're weird. Photo for convenience.

The sparkly rock I got from one of my first crushes (a short-haired "boy" named Helen), the smart start wallet was for winning at math, and that's a tiny Snow White book. Also, a coffee stirrer.

Oh. Throw away? No, i don't need to throw away my Little Wooden Doll and the book she came with. Or my Caramel camel stuffed camel. Or my Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore sawdust stuffed animals. Or my copy of 'The Changeling'.

:)

4 old teddy bears.

My absolute favourite grandchampions (horses). I gave the rest to nieces, nephews and younger siblings.

A huon pine ottoman with leather topping. Made by a family friend. A chest made by my Dad when I was 5 - I was upset at my little brothers getting into things so he made it for me.

Small collection of 'breakables' - little statues and the like

Various books such as cuddlepot and snugglepie, Tom Sawyer, Muddleheaded Wombat, The Faraway Tree...

*thinks*

My pet.

*thinks more*

There's more things, but they're all in storage at my folks house until I can work out how to get them to where I currently live. Stupid ocean.

My favorite pillows. I have 2, and one of them is from my kindergarten years in the 1990s. The other one is a long tubular shaped pillow I got since primary school that I still hug in my sleep today. *doesn't regret anything*

Edit: Ooh, and my hand-drawn artworks. My school gives out a lot of exercise books during the beginning of the year, and there are always several books that are unused. So I used to have a 'Buku Conteng' (Doodle book) made out of the unused ones and I would doodle the SHIT out of them/write fanfics with my friend (I miss you)/tear off pages for origami etc. etc.

Today I have scanned most of my doodles (high school and people STILL love them) and I've been trying to transcribe my written fanfics in them to my laptop (if I'm not feeling lazy, that is...)

Still though, I have the original Doodle books and I will never, NEVER throwing them out.

And because I want to share, my pen/pencil doodles on DeviantArt.

I still have quite a collection of childhood things, but one of the most important is my Nip Beanie Baby (a tan cat). I got it when I was five, and it's traveled to college with me. It still has the pink pipe-cleaner collar I made all those years ago. :]

I would never throw it away, but I still have the first book I ever learned to read at age 3-1/2. It's one of those cardboard thick-pages books about baby animals, featuring photos of them against backdrops of truly horrible 70s interior decor colors, LOL. I hope I still have it when I die.

All of my school notes from junior high on. Kind of weird, now that I think about it, but I drew in them, and wrote stories, and wrote pretty good notes, so it seems a shame to get rid of them.

Please seek a therapist if you think you're becoming a hoarder. Hoarding is srs bsns and a blight on entire families. My father was a hoarder; he died last year and my brother filled ten dumpsters when he cleared out the house.

I just kept one teddybear myself, plus two bits of clothes that belonged to my late mother. I've moved to another continent, though - I might have had more keepsakes if I'd stayed put. My sister strayed less far, and she's still got custody of our childhood cups and bowls with our names on.

quite a few stuffed animals, my choir sheet music, & a blanket my cousin sent me for my 1st bday when he was stationed in Korea.
