Re: Petty Grudges You've Held Since Childhood

When I was roughly 7 or 8, I really, really wanted a hamster.

I did my research. I played with the one in class to prove that I was responsible enough to be handling one. I did everything I could think of to get one but we really didn't have the money for it at the time so the idea was nixed.

Then?

My birthday. We don't really have much in the way of extended family; but, miracle of miracles I somehow managed to receive a big 50 bucks from one of my grandparents. (The first and only time such a thing happened I might add.)

My thoughts? A hamster. My mother's? Add to savings for college.

So, after a long discussion about responsibility the money went into the bank.

Fast forward ten years.

College savings? As it turns out my parents broke into that years ago. Both of them. Which is a fact made all the more ironic as they divorced and split my childhood savings money to each of their separate ways.

...And I've still never fucking gotten my hamster.

Wow, that's just fucked up. O__O

You owe them NOTHING, anon. NOTHING.

Aww I'm so sorry that you never got your hamster on top of being robbed by your parents. If it makes you feel better, my parents had a college fund saved up for me, too, and I never saw a dime of it either.

Logically, I can get the idea of survival versus saving for college 'someday'.

So it's harder to begrudge the fact that they took out the money that they put in, in the first place. But really, I put that fifty bucks in there!

...Coulda at least used it to get me a used text book for college.

I've gotta say, before I got to the "fast forward ten years" part, I was really side-eying your mom. I find the whole "put it in your college fund!" attitude hilarious in retrospect since dribs and drabs of birthday and holiday money ain't gonna make a dent in college tuition. You'd need a $50 birthday present every week for something like ten years before you had enough to afford four years of tuition at even a cheap school (not counting room and board) without relying on grants, loans, or additional contributions from your parents. I think a better lesson in responsibility would be to teach children save those small amounts of money for things they want. Like hamsters.

Then I read the "fast forward ten years" part and stopped side-eying and started making an angry face.

Also: you should go buy yourself a hamster. If you no longer want a hamster, find some kid with a birthday and give that kid $50 on the condition it be used for HAMSTER PURPOSES ONLY.

If I didn't have a cat now... But I think that would probably count as cruel and unusual. To the hamster.

I may just take your last bit of advice though. Totally be worth it to see someone else's birthday wish of a hamster be granted.
