Seriously speaking, a lot of their, er, implementations? Techniques? Systems? Whatever the word is, a lot of their site gives me the impression that every single thing must be ridiculously taxing on their servers.

I don't know how they're going to make the money to pay back their investors and cover all their costs. The paid themes and the tumblr spotlight or whatever they're using as advertisement can't possibly be giving them enough revenue.

What's their plan? Do they even have one?

I've never considered it from that angle. Now that you mention it, how the hell do they even get this site up and running?

Sometimes, I swear this site is just a group of children left to run around with some shiny toys but with no adult supervision whatsoever.

This is just my opinion, but after reading around, I get the impression that they were simply that good at convincing investors to throw money their way with vague "this is the future of social media networks", "look at how many users we have" clever wording.

They might even believe it themselves, and because they might have a buffer of a few more years to start actually worrying about the money, they haven't taken any protective measures beyond "try to dissuade script users like missing e from consuming more resources", or maybe even the mess that is searching by tags and such is so... choppy...? To avoid wasting more server space on that.

That still doesn't explain the insanity that is infinite scrolling and why there is a limit on how many posts you can make for every 24 hours block, but I still feel that isn't anywhere near enough.
