As far as I'm concerned 90 percent of AO3's irritations could be solved with a better search software. I didn't mind so much scrolling when I had only 5 pages of fics that fit my bizarrely specific preferences.

Part of the problem is that they had a huge influx of users after ffn.net went on their rules enforcement spree and deleted a lot of porn. This has overloaded the AO3 servers, there seem to be some problems with the site's coding and there are some other factors involved, too, but I haven't been watching those threads at fail-fandomanon very closely.

At any rate, they weren't expecting to get hit with so many new users all at once, and now the site is overloaded, from what I can gather. How quickly it will be fixed, I have no idea. They're trying to do something about it, but it's slow going for a lot of reasons, not all of them to do with the technical side of things.

But don't you need a code to get into AO3 or did they change it recently to open membership? If the latter, I can see how a mass migration could overload the servers. But if the former, couldn't they have paced the approvals better? Or are these people that had gotten approval prior but didn't bother moving until the crackdown?

Does it matter if you're registered or not? You still create bandwidth when you're browsing the site.

You do, but so many people got codes all at once that they flooded the site. When someone gets an approval for membership, they get several spare codes, and a lot of people gave out their spares when the ffn.net purge was going down. Also, many, many people applied for membership, all at once, to the point where approvals are now backed up for several months.

And yeah, I think there were probably a lot of people who'd gotten approval but didn't bother moving until that point.
