Tumblr isn't as grand for lengthy discussions (well, not for lengthy discussions with anybody - most of the ones that occur are between individuals who know each other or two or three random people that started engaging one another), so I understand the frustrations there. I wish they would get on board a sophisticated commenting system and whatnot.
But that aside, Tumblr is great for people who don't want to participate in fandom by writing fic, lengthy discussions, etc. Some people just want to reblog and squee and make gifs and short responses or like posts. I think it's wonderful in that regard.
It's also really good for signal boosts, exposure, and sucking people in across-fandoms. The tagging system (when it actually works) is extremely interactive and helpful for specific topics.
