I was sympathetic up to the "What Would Sherlock Do" bit at the end, which made me raise a brow. Sherlock's fictional. He doesn't think anything except what we real people make him think through the power of our (dirty) imagination. So by that reasoning, he'd be all for being shipped constantly with Watson. Nothing he wouldn't love better.

I think what I was trying to get at there was that, well, if you are so in love with a character, why did you fall in love with them? Surely, it was for their existing character traits. Why do you love them so much you want to write stories bout them? I hope just as a foil to write OOC bad romance fic? That's what I don't get. You can get lovey-goopy romance everywhere. Why choose a canonically stoic character and turn them into just another lovesick fool? I get that people can do whatever they want with fictional characters, but I just don't understand why they do it. And it is possible to write romance without going the route of "everything stops for this other character, when they fall in love, the rest of their life just ends and they have SEX ALL THE TIME!!!!"

Now, say, in cases like A Cure For Boredom,</> it's written in a very Sherlock like, believable way. The sex becomes his experiment, his new project to understand. But that's just... not how most of it is done. So I just don't understand why so many people tout this "HE'S FICTIONAL, WE CAN DO WHATEVER WE WANT!!" but get just as easily offended by OOC Mary Sue/Gary Stu type fic.
*shrug*

This is rediculous. First of all, of all the canons to pick on Sherlock? There are over 200 versions of canon Sherlock out there, each one with a different personality. If you are going to be the purest of the pure when it comes to canon, you should pick one with only one version to draw from.

Secondly, just because you find it intrinsic to Sherlock's personality to never want sex, that doesn't mean most people do. Sherlock is more than just a sexual orientation and a sex drive. I dare say, those aren't even close to the most important canon parts of him.

Thirdly, fans come to fandom to get what we can't from canon. We can't get that ooey gooey romance everywhere. There is virtually no canon slash out there, so fanfic suffices. And if we are doing it in fanfic, why not with the characters we like? What makes Sherlock more sacred than the Avengers? Or any other canon?

Forth, lastly and most importantly -- you don't get to dictate how other people enjoy things. Just because you don't get anything out of a shippy version of Sherlock/John doesn't mean that the rest of us don't. Frankly, the fact that you don't like all the slashfic is really your problem not ours.
