DISCLAIMER: This happened 6-7 years ago. I said "fuck that shit" to the drama and didn't come back until things settled down. So, most of what I remember is from reading old forums and mailing lists that may or may not exist anymore. Therefore, please take what I say with a grain of salt. Especially the passages marked by stars (*) - they should be taken with multiple grains of salt.

TL;DR DISCLAIMER: I do not claim that everything below is the word of God ohohoho absolutely true or correct. Nor should you think so.

Without further ado...

As far as I can gather, the original author was flamed because [OMG FORCED SLAVERY! STUDENT-TEACHER SEX!! UNDERAGE SEX!!!]# so she [abandoned it]$ and said [other people can continue the story (and deal with the flames) if they want to]*.

At least three people decided to rewrite the fic from the beginning or continue from where it left off. One was a [rewrite + continuation]* which also ended up [being abandoned after a while]%. I'm not sure what happened to the second one - the only place that hosted the fic closed down for good a few months ago (On-line Wizarding Library/OWL archives/owl.tauri.org is no more) and the author is no longer in fandom. I suspect it was also abandoned.

The third one is Jordan Grant's epic, and the only version that is complete. Jordan Grant [received the original author's approval]^, [got notes from the original author]* and wrote her version based on the outline she received. The opening bits of Part I are almost, if not exactly, the same as the original version. IIRC, the original fic covered up to about the end of the first week, which is less than 1/10th of Part I. The London incident starts around the last third of Part I.

Was what happened in London part of the original author's plans? I've no idea. If it was, she must have had a hell of an outline planned before she abandoned the fic.

The end.

# Topics of the majority of the flames.

$ I'm pretty sure there were other things going on besides the flames, which contributed to the original author's flounce.

% Author said she stopped writing it.

^ Read it somewhere in the A/Ns.

/fuck I need to learn to summarize better

You always make such competently helpful posts it puts a smile on my face.

Also you've kind of whetted my appetite for fandomwank's flounce tag.

Aw :3

It was an internet suicide flounce - pseudicide and all, and there was a lot of wank speculation about whether Jordan Grant is the original author or not.

/I told you my wank-o-meter is broken!

ayrt spoilers

Thank you so much!

And that is such a neatly formatted explanation!

Those complaints are kinda weird in a pairing (and a fandom) where there are a shitload of those kind of fics (underage sex, slavery, teacher/student, etc.). Like, I'm not saying those complaints aren't valid, but that it's odd that they happened when this wasn't the only person writing that.

I think you must be right about there being other factors in the author quitting.

Ugh, fandom wank, why must you destroy beautiful things. orz

What I liked about this fic, when compared to others along those "but you must bond!" types, is that Snape realized that he had screwed up big time (assuming that Harry had tons of experience, that he wasn't being pushed into anything he wasn't ready for, that he was James 2.0, etc.) and he freaked out and tried to blame it on Harry for not saying anything, but you could tell that it had scared Snape and I was all like "oh yes they will talk things out and learn to understand each other and stop making assumptions and everything will be awesome forever", but then the fic went downhill after that. :(

(As you can probably tell, I've been reading Terry Pratchett ;D)

True, there were other fics that also had underage sex, slavery, teacher/student, etc. but were they all found in the same story? The only thing I am absolutely sure of was the drama and the author quitting fandom/deleting the penname. Many authors have been driven out of fandom because of wank. I'm not happy they had to leave, but I'm thankful for their contributions to fandom.

If you're looking for a fic similar to Cambiare Podentes, but where Snape and Harry "talk things out and learn to understand each other and stop making assumptions" and everything was "awesome forever", I suggest My Man Friday by Enahma. It is no longer found online though.

(I'm gonna read this Pratchett person's books one day. I feel like I'm missing on something big. D:)

Wow, I was looking for it and I see the author chiming in in some places to not have the fic archived or linked to. Even the wayback machine doesn't have it. (but, you know, internet, that won't stop people from sharing. thanks for the rec!)

My obsession with saving every single story I like to my hard-drive was not misplaced then.

I can only imagine what kind of nasty comments were sent the author's way that it convinced them to take the fic down forever.

(You've probably heard of this Pratchett person. He's most famous for his Discworld series of novels. It's a fun series, full of parodies and satire. I like it. :D)

I think it is worth it to save a copy of faved stories. I've seen stories
-lost because of archive deaths
-taken down by archive mods
-removed by authors' friends as a prank
-taken down for re-writes but the re-write projects were never completed
-taken down by hackers
-removed because of real-life copyright notices
-taken down because the stories were flamed
-taken down because the author was driven out of fandom by trolls
-removed because the author was in the process of becoming/became a published author
-removed because the author doesn't want their fanfiction online anymore due to difference in their view of fanfic/job requirement/discovery by family/discovery by real-life friends/other real-life issues/etc.

The internet makes it both easier to find and archive stories and easier to lose stories. Hanging out on fic finding communities is heartbreaking because they are usually the first to realize when authors have left fandom, stories are taken down, and when archives are lost.

To end on a less sombre note - I hope you manage to find a copy of the story. Happy reading!

I found a person who got a copy from another person. I hope they reply!

Thank you! <3
