Hey, the Reeds are straight up awesome. They appear to have their shit about 1,000 times more together than everyone else in the series.

I don't watch the show/read the books, but anything that is more likely to ensure your survival is a smart decision, so I think you're doing it right OP.

The Reeds are very cool - but they're not really a 'House' in the traditional Westerosi sense.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-12 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
late to the party, but actually, they are a House, just not a Great House- there are the Great Houses which are the ruling houses of specific regions, the noble houses who are sworn to the Great Houses of their region, and the knightly houses, which... have knights? Not too clear on the last.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-07 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
ASOIAF is really a grimdark medieval Harry Potter with obvious Lovecraftian elements.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's the English War of the Roses; via Shakespeare, with magic. (Hey, I can't fault GRRM- if you're gonna steal, steal from the best! But the amount of people who don't catch onto the fucking obvious Stark/York/white rose and Lannister/Lancaster/red rose business is ridiculous.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, not really a fan [I only watched half-way through season 1, if that far] but the Lancaster reference isn't actually too hard to get? Particularly the relationship between Jeffery and his mother is concerned [and the *name*], but, in fairness, there's so much going on you really need to take a step back from the whole thing before it really jumps out at you.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
What's Lovecraftian about it, besides the Greyjoys (kind of)?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
"What is dead may never die", the gigantic sleeping monsters who are in a slumber for centuries until the wake up to wreck civilization

The creepy fanboys want to belong in a House? Ew, as if most of the Houses weren't full with enough creeps.

I keep cracking up at the crocodile, but yeah, their house seems pretty cool.

My favorite houses are Arryn and Martell, which are pretty big in comparison, but are nowhere near as popular as Stark or even Tully; I can sorta relate.

I love the crocodile!

I feel like the only person who honestly likes the Targaryens. Though it's really just because I like their name, Dany is my favorite character, and dragons are awesome.

No spoilers please - I've only read two books. :)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-08-08 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I've only watched the show, so I think my attraction to the Targaryens mostly has to do with my attraction to the actress who plays Dany. Plus, Dany is pretty bad ass in season 1.

I love the Martells, so very very much. The Sand Snakes are awesome.

As for House Reed, you know they're going to do something, and you know it's going to be cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say the only reason is because people always tend to sway towards the higher represented characters/houses whatever. That's why there is such a larger amount of people who say they are Gryffindor or Slytherin than Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. I think most people just don't even consider anything but the "main" houses when they think of which house they'd like to be.

The Reeds are SO underrated </3

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
You know what I fucking hate? The fact that there were never any secrets about this series until the TV show started. But now, everyone fucking talks about it.

ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

People at work are like, "do you watch Game of Thrones?" And I'm like, "uh, no, I don't have cable," and it's like I'm a fucking hydra.

READ SOMETHING YOU GODDAMN ILLITERATE FUCKS.

sailorgenerous: (Filly PLEASE)

[personal profile] sailorgenerous 2012-08-08 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, where to start with this one.

First! You do realize that having a series widely available (as much as HBO can be counted "widely available") in a different medium is actually very likely to attract people back to the original medium, yes? I know a good amount of show fans who turned around and gave the books a try because they liked what they saw and they talked with book fans who encouraged them instead of referring to them as "illiterate fucks."

Second! Have you taken a look at how stupidly frigging huge these books are? The entire Harry Potter series is about as long as the first three put together, and there are five and counting. Each ASoIaF novel still requires a map and an index of houses and who's in what to even keep track of what's going on, and even then it's tough to remember everything that's happening. These are long, complicated books, and not everyone is up for reading them. Some people read slowly and would rather pick books that won't take them over a year to complete. Some people don't want something that complicated. Some people can follow things better if they see the action onscreen. Someone enjoying a different interpretation of the same story does not make them a lesser fan than you, especially since GRRM works on the show himself and approves the changes.

Third! Sounds like most of your anger is at your coworkers. Maybe you can explain to them that HBO is expensive/you don't want it/whatever. Sounds like they might not understand that fact.

Overall: "READ SOMETHING YOU GODDAMN ILLITERATE FUCKS" is a terrible way to get someone to read. Take a step back, try to understand the situation, and try a different approach.

Alternatively, if we're dealing with the lowest common denominator here...troll harder.

You know I've been pretty amazed by how many I've encountered that have read the books but not seen the show. I brought the book to work with me once and there were several people who were like, "Oh what volume is that? I'm waiting on the next one," but would only blink at me when I asked about the TV show.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think of them as a traditional House, per se, but you're right, they're key to quite a few secrets so I imagine their roles will gain greater importance as the books progress.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Did you just call Baratheon a popular house? LOL. I know more Reed fans than Baratheon fans (and I know most Baratheon fans).
