(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 01:26 am (UTC)(link)ALL THE FUCKING TIME.
People at work are like, "do you watch Game of Thrones?" And I'm like, "uh, no, I don't have cable," and it's like I'm a fucking hydra.
READ SOMETHING YOU GODDAMN ILLITERATE FUCKS.

I think a lot of the people watching the show read the books (at least the ones that were out) YEARS ago before a show was even a possibility. I know did. Also, today, I finished reading House of Leaves, re-read part of The Graveyard Book (thanks ever so for that rec, F!S), and devoured a whole Lucky magazine whilst soaking in the bath.
So, in conclusion, I'm sorry the OP is mad about not having cable. That would piss me off too.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 02:02 am (UTC)(link)I watched the first couple of episodes, because the internet knows no boundaries. Got annoyed. Might watch the rest later, might not. Oh well.
The anger comes from the fact that it seems no one was talking about or reading this stuff until someone decided to water it down and make it into a TV series. Now, everyone's a fan and an expert, even the folks who say, "LOL I DON'T READ THAT'S FOR PEOPLE IN SCHOOL LOL." It's all easy-peasy, don't have to use your brain, proffered on a platter. Keep being mindless, Western civilization! It's working out pretty fucking well, given the current state of things!

Srsly, though, I misread your initial comment. It sounded like you were partially mad because you couldn't watch the show.
As for the rest of your comment, almost everyone I know who watches the show read the books too. But I hang out with people who read, so IDK.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 09:55 am (UTC)(link)They said they hadn't, and continued to act as though that didn't matter, claiming that they know that Jaime will never change because "they know that sort of abusive character". The whole time I was simply scratching my head like...what the fuck?
Also, angry-anon, where are you from?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 01:42 am (UTC)(link)(And by "go," I mean, "work with it, yo," not "get out of here," which I've belatedly realized could be an interpretation of the afore-posted commment).

First! You do realize that having a series widely available (as much as HBO can be counted "widely available") in a different medium is actually very likely to attract people back to the original medium, yes? I know a good amount of show fans who turned around and gave the books a try because they liked what they saw and they talked with book fans who encouraged them instead of referring to them as "illiterate fucks."
Second! Have you taken a look at how stupidly frigging huge these books are? The entire Harry Potter series is about as long as the first three put together, and there are five and counting. Each ASoIaF novel still requires a map and an index of houses and who's in what to even keep track of what's going on, and even then it's tough to remember everything that's happening. These are long, complicated books, and not everyone is up for reading them. Some people read slowly and would rather pick books that won't take them over a year to complete. Some people don't want something that complicated. Some people can follow things better if they see the action onscreen. Someone enjoying a different interpretation of the same story does not make them a lesser fan than you, especially since GRRM works on the show himself and approves the changes.
Third! Sounds like most of your anger is at your coworkers. Maybe you can explain to them that HBO is expensive/you don't want it/whatever. Sounds like they might not understand that fact.
Overall: "READ SOMETHING YOU GODDAMN ILLITERATE FUCKS" is a terrible way to get someone to read. Take a step back, try to understand the situation, and try a different approach.
Alternatively, if we're dealing with the lowest common denominator here...troll harder.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 03:16 am (UTC)(link)Why do you do this to me? Everything I've ever done has been for you. EVERYTHING. And who do you turn to? The liars and the fakes. They hurt you and you run to me, but when times are good, you ignore my calls. I've come to you, been there for you, but you have never, EVER, been there for me.
Why? WHY?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 10:12 am (UTC)(link)...Yet I've never managed to finish the Harry Potter series. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this. Oh well, good fanfiction > the epilogue.
At any rate television rots your brain. Hah.

You've never managed to finish the Harry Potter series, yet you've read the epilogue? Okay then. Not anywhere near the point I was making, but okay.
Wait. Hang on. You've ignored every point I've tried to make, responded with your personal semi-relevant anecdotes, and finished with a trite, outdated idiom and "hah?" I'm sorry, I had no idea I was talking with a complete media snob. I'll just watch my brain-rotting nature documentaries somewhere else and talk ASoIaF/GoT fandom with people who keep open minds. Sorry for wasting your time trying to help you see the other side of a situation.
Though somehow I doubt you'd complain as much if they'd made Game of Thrones movies instead.
