Rachael Leigh Cook as Kate Moretti, a former student of Pierce's and the FBI agent who recruited him. Men are usually taken by her beauty.

I've watched some Perceptions, and overall I like it, because it's proceedural fun with a protagonist who is cute and quirky. I find it a little -- okay, very convenient in the magical mental illness trope department (his hallucinations are waaaaay more useful than any hallucination has a right to be). But you know, magical realism is good fun. I do hope that they stop pretending that there is any real science actually backing this show up. The wikipedia worthy research is not really worth the "If you want to find out more" footnote at the end of the show.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 04:15 am (UTC)(link)My view on the 'useful hallucinations' is colored by the fact that House used the same ploy a while back (Ghost!Amber hanging around and illustrating all of the mental leaps we usually only just see as 'ah-ha!' moments), and I liked it there.
IOW, the hallucinations are his own subconscious trying to make connections that he hasn't fully grasped yet. I enjoy the way the viewer is 'let in' on that process, as opposed to the standard where the hero generally just gets an Idea Face and then scene-jump to him announcing the identity of the killer.

I just don't buy that they are a realistic depiction of actual schizophrenic behavior. And it's not. Not getting into it, but I have a lot of first hand exposure to actual schizophrenics, and their halucinations aren't their brains working out problems -- more the other way around. But that really doesn't make for good story telling.
I was okay with House too, because I didn't for a second think that his exploits were at all realistic.
My problem is the note at the end where it says "If you want to know more about this condition" like it was some kind of fucking PSA. No. Or maybe yes, I'd like to know more about that disorder, but not because it was presented so realistically!

I will say: Part of my interest in Perception is that I like shows featuring characters with mental and physical disabilities. And, yes, I realize that the depiction of schizophrenia in Perception is... probably not terribly accurate [cough], but... I still like the show. (-:

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)But yeah, Elementary makes me so angry/sad/upset. I watched the trailer last week and felt a part of my soul die. Watson isn't a veteran anymore (because it's not like women are in the military nowadays ... oh wait), her medical license has been revoked (?!?!?!??!), and oh yeah, she's a woman because having two dudes hang out and solve crimes is too gay for American audiences? Do they know how popular the BBC version, with its HoYay and FoeYay, has been, even with *gasp* American audiences?
Why call her "Watson" if she's not even Watson anymore?
Why couldn't they have made Sherlock a woman too? And Lestrade? I'd have absolutely loved that, genderswapping the entire cast. But blatantly trying to avoid homoeroticism and get a "sexy exotic non-military fem!Watson" for American audiences is insulting. As an American viewer, that's not what I want to see and I'm going to avoid the show like the plague. I feel bad for the people working on the show because it honestly doesn't look like it's going to last very long.
