I feel the opposite. I'm more excited by the Elementary teasers and buzz than any episode of Perception (which I turned off after the first commercial break). And I'm hopeful the buzz will shut up every Sherlock BBC stan on my friend pages making excuses as to why they think the show will suck.

Maybe I think more like the critics, huh.

I'd want to see Elementary if I didn't love Watson so much (in any incarnation I've seen/read him in) and didn't feel that making him non-military ruined his character. Because I do like the look of the dude playing Sherlock. And I generally like Lucy Liu, so I don't want to watch it and end up hating her for how they made her character.

OMFG WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS SHOW BEFORE I LOOKED IT UP AND IT LOOKED LIKE THE BEST SHOW EVER.

Thanks, OP for the heads up!

God, this show has everything I love in it.

*goes to find episodes immediately*

I found the first episodes a bit shaky, but it's getting better, imo. The most recent one ("Messenger") was really good.

OP

Right? I had one psychology textbook I used to read like it was a novel because some of the case studies mentioned were just interesting to me, and so many of the ones I remember (face blindness, lack of short-term memory, etc) have popped up here already. (Granted, I have no idea how *accurate* they're being, but it's still fun.)

Oh, and because I can't edit my comment now after fangirling I'll just put my actual opinion on the thread:

I hope all of the shows end up being good! Then that's three shows for everyone to like! Hooray!

OP

Oh, I'm hoping so too, but I tend to develop mental blocks when I try to get into shows that are too similar too close together - particularly since I've been excited about having a SH-adaptation show to watch from the start and now, well, it's already sort of here.

I really want to give Perception a chance, but I watch so much TV as is...there's just no time right now. But maybe when the season is over I can catch up? I'm glad it seems to be well liked.

it sounds like a the mentalist/beautiful mind blend with will truman and josie from josie and the pussycats as leads. not sure if intrigued.

Rachael Leigh Cook as Kate Moretti, a former student of Pierce's and the FBI agent who recruited him. Men are usually taken by her beauty.

try baggy clothes and glasses.

I don't presuppose flaws before they happen. So much of what makes a show good or bad is execution, and Elementary hasn't had a chance to show us how they plan on executing the concept. The concept itself is pretty tried and true: the brilliant quirky observant detective and his loyal assistant. The fact that Watson is female is neither here nor there as far as I'm concerned.

I've watched some Perceptions, and overall I like it, because it's proceedural fun with a protagonist who is cute and quirky. I find it a little -- okay, very convenient in the magical mental illness trope department (his hallucinations are waaaaay more useful than any hallucination has a right to be). But you know, magical realism is good fun. I do hope that they stop pretending that there is any real science actually backing this show up. The wikipedia worthy research is not really worth the "If you want to find out more" footnote at the end of the show.

Re: Watson: On this show at least, I don't see Moretti as Watson. I think that's more Lewicki's role. (And that is one note of difference between the two shows I'm glad to have.)

My view on the 'useful hallucinations' is colored by the fact that House used the same ploy a while back (Ghost!Amber hanging around and illustrating all of the mental leaps we usually only just see as 'ah-ha!' moments), and I liked it there.

IOW, the hallucinations are his own subconscious trying to make connections that he hasn't fully grasped yet. I enjoy the way the viewer is 'let in' on that process, as opposed to the standard where the hero generally just gets an Idea Face and then scene-jump to him announcing the identity of the killer.

Don't get me wrong. I love magic. Give me a detective with psychic powers any day, and I have no problem whatsoever with it.

I just don't buy that they are a realistic depiction of actual schizophrenic behavior. And it's not. Not getting into it, but I have a lot of first hand exposure to actual schizophrenics, and their halucinations aren't their brains working out problems -- more the other way around. But that really doesn't make for good story telling.

I was okay with House too, because I didn't for a second think that his exploits were at all realistic.

My problem is the note at the end where it says "If you want to know more about this condition" like it was some kind of fucking PSA. No. Or maybe yes, I'd like to know more about that disorder, but not because it was presented so realistically!

Yeah, I get that the things the hallucinations are saying are just Daniel's working through the problem, and what "they" tell him are things he noticed in the back of his mind. But, yeah, I don't think that's what schizophrenia is.

I'm enjoying Perception. I'm cautiously optimistic about Elementary...

I will say: Part of my interest in Perception is that I like shows featuring characters with mental and physical disabilities. And, yes, I realize that the depiction of schizophrenia in Perception is... probably not terribly accurate [cough], but... I still like the show. (-:

I will never forgive Elementary for deciding that women couldn't never possible be a doctor in the military and then deciding that obviously the female lead needs more angst so lets make her non credible as a medical professional and pull her medical licensee. Why do people defend this? Are we that desperate for women in lead roles? Are we that desperate for a genderswaped Watson?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
As we all know male characters never get angsty backgrounds. And when they do fandom is never all over that and eats it up with a spoon. No siree.

I have a feeling the anon's not upset about her having an angsty background, s/he's upset that they had her be a fuck-up who lost her license, instead of letting her be a competent doctor like the canon (and BBC) version of Watson.

Thank you for telling me about Perception, anon, I watched the first episode last night and loved it! Can't wait to watch more!

But yeah, Elementary makes me so angry/sad/upset. I watched the trailer last week and felt a part of my soul die. Watson isn't a veteran anymore (because it's not like women are in the military nowadays ... oh wait), her medical license has been revoked (?!?!?!??!), and oh yeah, she's a woman because having two dudes hang out and solve crimes is too gay for American audiences? Do they know how popular the BBC version, with its HoYay and FoeYay, has been, even with *gasp* American audiences?
Why call her "Watson" if she's not even Watson anymore?

Why couldn't they have made Sherlock a woman too? And Lestrade? I'd have absolutely loved that, genderswapping the entire cast. But blatantly trying to avoid homoeroticism and get a "sexy exotic non-military fem!Watson" for American audiences is insulting. As an American viewer, that's not what I want to see and I'm going to avoid the show like the plague. I feel bad for the people working on the show because it honestly doesn't look like it's going to last very long.
