I haven't read all of First Class, but what I did I enjoyed-- probably more so the original The X-Men run. The characters were fun and relatable. They felt like honest younger versions of their current canon selves.

Batman: TAS icons are the best. He was so sassy. <3

Obviously not B:TAS but I need to post this when I think of sassy Batman. :)

Lqtm, the original X-men were pretty lame, so it's completely understandable that you'd like the later ones better. I'm still dying for a resurgance of the New Mutants.
b_dangerous: <:( (Batman Sad)

Haha Yup. I wanted to find a nice way of saying that. I... really don't like Stan Lee's old writing. /shame

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's the same as Star Trek- the original run was a great idea poorly executed. It was in the refining of that idea that a pop cult classic was born. People just like to ignore that the first run was really lame what with snowman!Iceman, the crappy powers and villains, and the Angel/Jean/Scott love triangle.

It's nice in some way that people at least respect the original source material-- but it is pretty silly. lol

I felt the same way, anon. First Class is probably not my favorite X-Men incarnation, but damn, it was fun. I liked the idea that the authors/artists had the desire to let these teens be teens--albeit super-powered teens, but hilariously awkward teens nonetheless. I think it worked so well when you know the original storylines and how serious and dire everything was.

And when I first heard they were making X-Men: First Class I thought it would be this, too. I was sorely disappointed.

I agree!

It was a series that had both very funny moments and heartwarming ones that made me tear up a little. The easy friendship/banter between Jean, Scott, Bobby, Hank and Warren was well done (I especially liked the Hank/Bobby bromance. Their little roadtrip was one of my favorite parts). I really liked the art too. And the silly side stories were pretty cute. And the Thor, Black Widow (who appeared along with Dum-Dum) Dr. Strange and Hulk appearances were fun.

It also made me ship Jean/Wanda and even Jean/Sue Storm pretty hard.

Amazon has the volumes for fairly cheap if anyone is interested

Jean/Sue? Do tell

[personal profile] doilycoffin 2012-08-10 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Sure!

Sue appears in volume 2, issue 1. The main conflict of the issue is that Jean, being the only female X-man in a house full of guys, has no female heroes to identify with and who understands the worries she has as a woman and a hero. The issue opens with Jean trying to use her telekinesis for flight. She ends up crashing into a tree and getting chastised by Cyclops for practicing by herself instead of with the team and she storms off. The Professor correctly guesses that it is not always easy for Jean to be surrounded by boys who, no matter how well meaning, just don't quite get what Jean is going through like another woman would (Bobby suggests that the Professor start wearing a wig. The Professor is not amused.)

Professor X invites Sue Storm to the mansion so she can have Jean shadow her for a bit and because she would have a similar perspective as Jean. Jean and Sue go out and end up kicking ass and being awesome. The X-men see these exploits on tv and start to worry that Jean is looking to make The Fantastic Four into The Fantastic Five and begin to panic. Meanwhile, Jean and Sue are having a bonding moment when Jean shares her frustration over the earlier incident mention, and Sue tells her that she understands "how embarrassing it is to risk failure in front of others, especially when you are a woman and everyone doubts your abilities already". They hug and it was a pretty nice/cute moment. Immediately afterwards, they both fuck shit up at a villain's hideout.

In the end, the remaining X-men show up to help take down the bad guys and in their own slightly bumbling ways they tell Jean that they'll try harder to understand her perspective and Jean assures them that she was never planning to leave the X-men and that they are her family. It was probably one of my favorite issues in the First Class series and I can't decide if I ship Jean/Sue more romantically or more friendshippy.

Those books were pretty close to perfect. Especially considering what an impenatrable mess the regular x-comics are, and how incredibly dire everything is in them these days. Plus, Jean and Wanda hanging out for girl time!

[personal profile] kayleen_san 2012-08-10 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, are you me?!?! I LOOOOOOVE the First Class comics and was mad to the point that I was seriously thinking about not seeing the movie (but that quickly faded). The movie was very good, despite not being about this series, haha.

Also, I want a million more adventures of Jean and Wanda.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
It probably would have made for an interesting movie. That said, I'm happier than I could ever express that they didn't go that route--another movie with Jean Gray and Scott Summers and I think I might have started boycotting.

(Also, talk about the continuity errors--Bobby Drake in the original trilogy and in First Class? Fans would have hated it.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
The X-men First Class movie had so many continuity errors that I'm shocked they don't just consider it an alternate continuity altogether. They don't really expect us to believe that the trilogy and First Class are compatible do they?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

LOL this. I liked the movie, but I nearly had a seizure while trying to figure out how the fuck they could possibly be in the same universe. The most glaring error was probably that Xavier was walking when he and Magneto went to Jean's house (and why the fuck was Magneto with him in the first place if they got divorced during First Class? Did they have an on again off again relationship? Actually, that's pretty funny. I'll consider it my headcanon). Did some mutant grant the Professor the ability to walk for a day? Da fuck? There were other continuity issues but that one made me lol the most.

First Class is an alternate history, not a prequel. Vaughn's made this pretty clear.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
First Class was not meant to be a direct prequel of the other X-men movies. It's an alternate history, just as Wolverine Origins was not a direct tie-in. Matthew Vaughn said: "My main rule was, ‘You know what, we’re trying to reboot and start a whole new X-Men franchise’ and therefore, making a film work on its own two feet was far more important than trying to be referential to the prior movies".

Read a little, people.

I feel bad for anybody who thinks these are "too childish", honestly. To me, these represent what superhero comics are supposed to be: a nice mix of lighthearted shenanigans with character development and maybe a bit of darkness here and there. But it's obvious I'm not very good at the whole "being a comic fan" thing. :P
