I ... think I might be getting you... maybe.

Are you saying you notice that when women have their hair up in movies they seem more stand offish, distant and cold, but when their hair comes down, they are more intimate and relaxed?

There's a reason they call it "letting your hair down."

All that fussiness to put your hair up makes you look sharp and professional, but also untouchable -- because in a real way, you are. That hair is sprayed stiff to get that not a hair out of place look. It's not nice and touchable. And if it is touched to much it stands up like a porcupine. Hense the "look but no touch" feel about women with their hair in tight buns and elaborate updos. When hair is loose and flowing, it's more casual, but also not something someone can mess up by touching the back of your head wrong. And it feels nicer to the touch.

So it's not that updos are hated. It's that updos are formal.

Braids and ponytails are hardly considered formal. Maybe french braids, but most braids? Nope.

Also, women who wear their hair up all the time are no more "untouchable" than women who wear it down all the time. It's a matter of taste (and I find your analysis of the entire thing frankly a little weird.)

No, it's quite reasonable to associate hair that is constrained and restricted with a similar personality and demeanour. Hair that is loose and free, allowed to flutter in the wind and have fingers run through it, is quite naturally associated with relaxed, approachable, romantic moods.

(Costume and makeup artists actually think about this stuff when they do their job. Choices are very deliberate and are meant to enhance character personality or convey meaning. Most people do this kind of analysis in high school.)

seriously this. updos have the air of being professional and formal. there are exceptions, but it's completely understandable why hair down is perceived as more approachable. and considering that the movies op is referring to consist of women getting together romantically with somebody, hmm, it might make a teensy weensy bit of sense.

but, you know, part of me really wants to believe this is a troll secret.
