Same.

I haven't seen any of these films but I'm guessing that they're cases of 'she cleans up nicely' ('progressions'). Woman with her hair up at the beginning = no1curr ----> woman with her hair down at the end = oh hai romantic interest. So Hollywood is telling us that women with their hair down are much more desirable than the reverse. I guess?

Are you sure "progression" was the word you intended to use here?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-09 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna just skip over the weirdness of your wording and agree, I too hate the way female stars don't ever seem to wear their hair up anymore, especially ones in action movies/TV. I remember watching Dark Angel when I was twelve and thinking, "PUT UP YOUR HAIR! PUT UP YOUR DAMN HAIR BEFORE SOMEONE PULLS IT OUT OR IT OBSTRUCTS YOUR VISION AND YOU DIE!"

I get it. Hair up, they're the sidekick, or assistant, or unapproachable. The hair goes down, flat or curling iron comes out, and all the sudden they're the viable love interest. I wear my hair pulled back a majority of the time, so I notice that kind of thing too.

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-08-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I noticed this too. It's really so common as it was lampshaded in that "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" movie because in that, the girl had to do the opposite: she had to wear her hair in a ponytail and put on glasses to succeed!

This does frustrate me a bit because, come ON, long hair gets in the way so much. Putting it up is SENSIBLE. Realistically if you have a woman that's fighting with long hair and it is down she is substantially more likely to lose because she can't SEE.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-09 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never even noticed this.

As a lady-person, I used to wear my hair up all the time because I didn't want to bother with it everyday--had too much to do, and valued sleep > spending an hour wrangling two feet of hair. And then I just chopped it all off.

Then again, I've never had much luck with dudes, whether I tried to make my hair FLAWLESS AND APPROACHABLE or not, so who am I to judge?

I get what you're saying. It irks me too.

Obviously the answer is for the women to shave their heads.

No seriously, I would pay to watch a movie with that and she was treated normally. No attention is drawn to it. She's just as attractive as all the other girls. That would be so cool.

I wish we saw more braids on kickass women. Braids are nice and practical. I think this pretty much every time I see an action hero woman with her loose hair whipping around.

It irks me too.

Just like it irks me when cops/detectives don't have their hair up when they are in a crime scene or processing evidence.

It only bugs me when it's totally unreasonable for that character to have their hair down. Like it drives me nuts how the girls on "2 Broke Girls" work as waitresses with their hair down--and while wearing heels. WHAT.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Drives me crazy when an action heroine in a movie doesn't tie her hair back when she's fighting zombies/ninjas/monsters/etc. I can't even do my customer service job without my hair tied back, it drives me crazy and gets in my face!

To be fair, anon, in action movies they tend to use stunt doubles, and it's a lot easier to put a wig on a stunt double than just shoot the stunts from the back and pray you don't get a side-angle of the stunt-double's face.

I ... think I might be getting you... maybe.

Are you saying you notice that when women have their hair up in movies they seem more stand offish, distant and cold, but when their hair comes down, they are more intimate and relaxed?

There's a reason they call it "letting your hair down."

All that fussiness to put your hair up makes you look sharp and professional, but also untouchable -- because in a real way, you are. That hair is sprayed stiff to get that not a hair out of place look. It's not nice and touchable. And if it is touched to much it stands up like a porcupine. Hense the "look but no touch" feel about women with their hair in tight buns and elaborate updos. When hair is loose and flowing, it's more casual, but also not something someone can mess up by touching the back of your head wrong. And it feels nicer to the touch.

So it's not that updos are hated. It's that updos are formal.

I would just love to see fluffy curly hair on screen. What's with all the super-straight hair? And if a character does have curly hair it's generally only so she can have it straightened in a makeover to make her attractive.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
you'd better not watch the original version of Bedazzled.

What a weird thing to get upset about.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks more like the OP is trolling because they're jealous of women with long hair. As a longhaired lady myself (down to my tailbone, in case you're wondering), I see A LOT of resentment and snarky comments just like the OP's from women with shorter hair. It only encourages me to wear my hair down even more. Why? Because I worked hard to take care of my hair and it's awesome, so STFU and get over yourself, OP.

Women are generally more attractive with their hair down because it frames and adds to their face, when they're meant to look pretty the scene is going to have it down. Also, in each of the 'before' pictures, they're on the job--medical, professional, military or police. When they have it down they're in a relaxed, non-work setting...or have had the hair forcibly dropped because of...y'know, violence. Would you rather it the other way around?
