I know nothing about any of the cheating stuff, but if it's true it doesn't surprise me. I remember starting to dislike him back when he started writing the fluffy food books and distancing himself from the earlier horror stuff.

Of course, I was just dismissed as a butthurt goth kid at the time, but Lost Souls is still one of my favorite books ever, and I genuinely love the two main characters, while I couldn't make myself care about the characters in the Liquor series at all. And it always bothered me that they had been together for like 15+ years I think and the book referred to them as "friends".

Not to mention that the dude who was not Ghost obviously acted out all of Brite's fantasies about brutalizing female bodies. Jesus fucking chirst.

I think the thing is that authors are actually allowed to explore different genres--they're not obligated to write stuff they don't enjoy and the fact is he lost interest in horror and became passionate about the culinary world and so went with it.

Honestly? I loved his horror and was a big fan (I still own just about everything he published) and when I back-bought a ton of his books I left Liquor until the very end because I thought it would be boring, but really enjoyed it. The characters didn't do it for me the way Ghost and Steve did, but a lot of Rickey and G-man's past and getting together is in The Value of X which isn't so easy to get hold of and so not so highly read, but that book might explain why they're so often referred to as 'friends' because they didn't stop being friends when they started their relationship.

Oh, I agree. Authors can write whatever they want, I was just bothered by the way this one went about it. Like once the culinary books came out, anytime anyone would ask him about the horror stuff, he'd be like "oh, I'm beyond that now, I don't want to talk about it" and made comments about how fans should quit talking about the older books, and it just rubbed me the wrong way. Like, I understand that you're not interested in horror anymore, and that's fine, but don't be a rude jerk about the books that got you fans in the first place.

Yeah, I have The Value of X (got it as soon as it came out, I was kind of obsessed back then) so I understand the history, but something about it just bugs me. I mean, I understand that couples that started as friends don't just stop being friends when they become involved romantically, but as far as I can remember they were never referred to as anything but friends. From my own personal experience it's always people referring to someone's same sex significant other as their "friend" because they're uncomfortable with them being gay and don't want to acknowledge the relationship for what it is, so I guess I just always had that in the back of my mind, and it bothered me.

I think a lot of those comments were in relation to the posts going on some fan community where people were still gushing over the older stuff he's moved away from now. In some ways the readership and the discussion (though I think it was more like LS meme reposting like "Who is your favourite LS character? Who is your least favourite?" kinds of things) came across as very young in comparison. I don't blame him for recoiling somewhat at that, because I had to leave that comm myself in the end, but I do agree you should have more care about what words you put out online about your fans.

In addition, I'll admit it's been a bunch of years since I read the Liquor stuff so the discomfort toward claiming a gay identity is something that I can't remember off the top of my head. But if you're right (and I'm inclined to think you are) then...yeah, I agree, that's quite disappointing. I feel like I'd wildly dislike a lot of his stuff now if I went back and reread it now that I'm Out and not a teenager anymore. Kinda sad, really.

I think I'd probably be the same way if I tried to reread any of it now. I attempted to reread Drawing Blood on a road trip 4 or 5 years ago, but couldn't really get into it and ended up putting it down after half an hour or so and not going back to it.

Lost Souls was always my favorite, but as people have mentioned elsewhere in this thread, it definitely had its problematic elements as far as the rape/violence towards women. I can't help but think if I read it now I'd have a far, far different opinion of it than I did as a teenager.
