but surely what you are doing is in itself a form of fandom, right? engaging in lengthy discussions and whatnot about characters. You're just doing it without the internet aspect. Maybe you could suggest something like "you know, I bet people have written about this- we should go find some!" or... something along those lines. Ok this isn't very helpful. But surely it would be an improvement if you could share fandom stuff? (unless she, idk, turned in to a crazy BNF or something, but yeah.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally get that. I have friends that I watch the same TV shows with etc. but I just don't want them in fandom for some reason. I don't even tell them about my fandom related Twitter Account, I have no clue why.

... except ...

What are you going to do if she ever does come across any of the Jack/Nine stuff you're made of your conversations, and recognizes them?

"I don't want her in fandom"

Am I the only one who finds this controlling and pretentious?

I figured it was about the kind of social partitioning we all tend to do. Like how you might not want your dating partner to hang out with your work friends, or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you mean, but we've had secrets of people introducing their friends to internet fandom and regretting it, so maybe that's the train of thinking op is following.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
The OP sounds selfish more than anything. That they want to keep their fandom discussions just between the two of them and no one else. Almost like they don't want to share. It's a little strange.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
The wording is a bit weird but I don't think it's really controlling. It's just like different circle of friends and sometimes you don't want them to mix.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-08-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe. I've gotten at least one other reply like that...but it just seems weird to me, idk it's like they're trying to engineer their social circle and control who can interact with who

maybe it's because I don't really run my social life that way? or if I do I don't realize it...

[personal profile] hiyami 2012-08-14 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
I run my social life like this, because I don't necessarily share the same aspects of my life with people in the different parts of it (fandom, RL friends, work, family, etc). Some things are more private than others, some things are of no interest to some people so I don't see the point of telling them about it, and fandom things in particular can get pretty embarrassing seen by people who aren't in it.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-08-14 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, thinking that you want to keep certain aspects of your life from some people, or figuring that some people would be bored by certain things, is one thing. This felt more to me like "I don't want X to be friends with Y and I would be upset if they were".

But OP doesn't mention anyone in fandom? Just that they don't want their IRL friend to find out that fandom as we know it online exists, basically.

Considering that once you dip a toe into it, you're more or less bound to come across things that are considered as questionable by most people who have no idea what we're doing, I think it's understandable?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it as she was concerned her friend would find the fic she's written and recognise her ideas. Which would be very awkward.

I never tell RL friends about being in internet fandom, they think it's sad and weird, which is a pretty standard view in my experience, so I just don't say anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was controlling, yeah. I could be wrong, though. I thought that maybe OP didn't want the person in fandom because they'd be talking to other fandom people — and maybe wouldn't talk to OP? Which would mean it was coming from a desire to control, yes. None of that is stated, though. Speculation, speculation…

Hmm. I have a similar reluctance with one IRL friend who I talk to a lot about some fandoms, and have even mentioned fic to, and though she's interested I'm hesitant about dragging her into it. She's several decades older than me so I dunno if she'd settle into fic fandom comfortably, and I'm not sure how well she'd react to knowing that I write tons of porn about videogame characters. Kind of wish she could magically discover fic fandom by herself and it wouldn't have to be 'my fault'. So I do get where you're coming from. I wish there was a way you could make it easy for her - just link her to a fic you like, or a rec list you approve of, and see where she goes from there, maybe?

I can sort of understand. I have a r/l friend who writes slash fic (though in our case we have less overlap), but we don't really talk about our writing so much. Somehow...it becomes awkward, if said out loud, I dunno.

All I could think when I read this was, "I bet she's totally into fandom and doesn't know how to tell you. Her comments are her way of trying to broach the topic."

But hey, that's just me.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I wondered the same thing!

Jack/Nine isn't even common enough for her friend not to stumble apon her though. They probably even know each other by usernames. It's not like Jack/Ianto where you easily might not encounter everyone into that pairing.

Although I'm sure her friend would recognise the fan fic plots.

Rude. Let her have some too OP. >:(

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
You should tell her about it and maybe offer to give her credit on the fics. Let her share in the fandom fun as well. Maybe she's like me, I like to think up plots, but I can't be bothered to write them out. I would think it's pretty cool to have inspired someone else. It's also possible that she already knows about fandom and fanfiction, but has just not mentioned it to you for her own personal reasons. Maybe she wrote fanfics too using your headcannons! :P

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
You probably are worried that if you show her fandom then she'll have other people to discuss it with and then she won't want to with you constantly. She wouldn't need you anymore
