I just think it worked better when RTD was controlling things, and Moffat wrote separate episodes. Moffat can do so really brilliant one-offs, but he's crap at intricate story archs.

TBH I think his one-offs were generally pretty weak as well. Some of them looked nice on the surface, but upon rewatching them, they're not very strong. And his characterization in them was always so... off.

True. I think he writes fun plots, but the characterizations...I agree there.

I think this is why I've come to hate him as a writer and a showrunner. He seems more concerned about appearing clever than actually being clever. So much of his stuff just falls apart if you think about it for longer than a minute. At least with RTD, we had solid character interaction to get us through the non-logical stuff and he made sure it was worked into episodes he didn't write (with the notable exception of Moff scripts). Moff just uses characters as plot points. Amy and Rory giving a crap about their child in a non-story arc episode? Forget about it.

Yeah, exactly. He tends to write his stories with a lot of gloss and flash so people won't notice the gaping plot holes, lack of characterization and misogyny. When you rewatch them, you tend to notice these things.
