My boyfriend and I are barely D-list celebrities, but we have a small yet loyal fandom. We act like we're just friends, and as far as anyone except our families know that's all we are, but in reality we've been together for around six months.

I know that some of our fans write stories about us, and even though I've never read any, it's pretty weird. A little creepy, but mostly just weird. Do they really find the idea of us together that hot?

This is less egregious than the incest-brother-cousin story because any advice or sympathy we give will be trivial since this is a trivial concern, but it's in such poor taste to troll a bunch of generally well-meaning people with fake requests for help.

We can't help being fooled by assholes with a better story, but we don't have to encourage the dregs to float up and start clogging up general comments with bullshit.

I thought the brother one was fairly trivial too, though. I may have missed a few comments, but from what I could tell their main worry was that gossipy neighbors would think they were weird, which is pretty damn trivial imo.

Sometimes when help secrets sound a little trolly or wanky people would rather reach out just in case and risk being made a fool of rather than ignore someone.

Sometimes the whole thing is such a mess you can't help but poke it with a stick.

And do people really get a sense of superiority that someone on the internet didn't immediately dismiss everyone as liars and trolls?

The only fool is the troll who gets off on people's genuine concern and thinks it has pulled the wool over our eyes. What they don't realize is that we are already blinded by Internet anonymity. Being the butt of the joke is moot when you can't read the punch line.

So, anon can laugh at our efforts to help because s/he is "tricking us," but in reality, anon is the one who is the joke.

Every time I see these kind of things all I can think is "Okaaaay. Sorry you don't know how to use the internet. I'll be over here having actual fun,".
