I don't recommend wearing pantyliners all the time. Great way to get BV.

*waves TMI flag*

TMI maybe?

ummm thanks? I've worn pantyliners literally every day since middle school, that's... *counts* more than seven years, and I've never had BV (at least not with symptoms?).

Also I just did some quick research on BV and while there are several lifestyle factors that affect your likelihood of getting it, wearing pantyliners isn't one of them. The closest was one site that said something about "certain feminine hygiene products" but that's super vague and I'd suspect it has more to do with tampons made of different materials since apparently that can raise your bacterial level (idk I never use tampons).

If you've never been tested before, then you really don't know if you've never had it. My case was asymptomatic. The only sign there was something wrong was an abnormal pap smear.

After going through the usual process of elimination (changed panties at least once a day, didn't swim or sit in a wet bathing suit for long periods, wasn't sexually active, didn't douche or wash inside the vaginal opening with soap of any kind, etc.), I was told it was most likely my practice of always wearing a pantiliner, because the synthetic fiber in the liner and the plastic on the bottom of it aren't breathable the way cotton panties are. The heat, moisture, and lack of air creates a perfect environment for bacteria.

I guess I'm not too worried. I go in for a regular pap smear, so... *shrug*

I work in sexual health and pantyliners are a bad idea. There's no need for them. It's one of those things where manufacturers have invented a problem where there isn't one. If vaginal discharge is so heavy it affects your underwear then you need a check up. Most women have some, but even the heaviest normal discharge will just cause a bit of a white mark when it dries, and will wash off. It's much healthier to wear cotton and let your whole vaginal area get some air flow. Pantyliners are only useful if you have a light period and use them for that, otherwise they make BV or Thrush worse.

I started in eighth grade because the discharge was making me feel uncomfortable. (I'm not sure if it's the same now, but it's been habit for years.) Thanks for mentioning that, I'll bring it up with my gyn when I see her this fall.

I'm not really that concerned, though. I've been wearing them for seven-ish years with no problems (that I know of).

Getting "air flow" in the vaginal area sounds really uncomfortable to me ngl =/

ETA: What is Thrush?

DA

Yeast infection. Very uncomfortable. Trust me on this.

On the subject of panty liners, I can imagine that heavy or colored discharge will make someone use them all the time, but on a personal level they only seem to make it worse for me and because of the lack of 'air flow', the whole area gets a bit itchy quite fast.

Seconding this. I only use them as extra protection in case of tampon leaks, when it's a couple days before my period and I'm not exactly sure when it's going to start, and at the very end when it's too light to use a tampon.

WHATS BV

leave us hanging why don't you

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess is bacterial vaginosis, but I've never met this as an abbreviation before so not sure.

Try changing them through the day.
