Transformers fans! Come hither and indoctrinate me!

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I want to get into Transformers but I'm not sure how. I don't care about the stupid-ass Bay movies, but what's the best way to get into the animated stuff? Should I do it linearly, from G1 and go through the shows in chronological order (I don't think I have the patience to do that thoroughly)? Or do you guys have specific series/season/episode recs (or arcs? Do they have arcs in Transformers?) for me? Any Dork Ages I should avoid? Any specific show that sucked in comparison to another?

May I suggest Transformers Prime? It's a new animated series, so there are only two seasons, it is an entirely new continuity, and it's pretty good.

If you're going to get into "classic" Transformers, yeah, I'd suggest just starting with G1 and watching the episodes in order. Keep in mind that it's a glorified toy commercial, so a lot of the episodes are utter crap (especially Season 3) and they're all pretty cheesy. It is pretty continuity light, so if an episode bores you you won't miss out on much by skipping it. When you're done that, watch Beast Wars, which is in the same continuity but is a much better show. Beast Machines comes after that but it isn't nearly as good.

I'm not familiar with the rest of the animated series so I can't help there.

I'm not the biggest Transformers fan but I'm gonna say HELL YEAH to Beast Wars. I really loved it because the characters were distinct from each other and were very entertaining to watch, and the storyline (from what I remember of it) was really fascinating. The mystery of it all just made me want to tune in to see how it unfolded. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish it but gave me lots of awesome memories growing up. 8D

I randomly catch the '80s cartoons from a retro cartoons station and it makes me laugh, although it seems pretty episodic to me so I don't feel an obligation to follow a schedule for it. Such a guilty pleasure though!

Most the the series are fairly standalone, meaning you can go into them without any previous knowledge of Transformers. They're all (canonly) alternate universes of each other, with G1 having the largest amount of related universes, so while there's plenty of similarities, they're all pretty much their own thing. The main G1 continuity (G1->BW->BM) should probably be watched in order, but other than that, it doesn't matter.

(Now, just as a fair warning, I'm pretty biased toward G1 and I'm not massively into Transformers, so some of this is based more on hearsay than me actually having seen it.)

I agree with the anon above me; definitely start with G1. It'll provide a good foundation for the characters and general world mechanics, and it's fairly entertaining besides. The movie is supposed to fit in between seasons 2 and 3, but you don't have to watch it to move on to season 3. It is worth watching though.

Favorite/recommended episodes...? Probably any multi-parters, basically anything with the Insecticons (i just really love the Insecticons though...) Traitor, Enter the Nightbird, A Prime Problem, The Master Builders, A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court (hands down the best episode imo), Child's Play... The only episode I'd definitively avoid is B.O.T. It's...bad.

Prime is pretty good, and it's currently airing, so you should check it out! It's not my personal favorite because the cast is considerably smaller and none of the Autobots they picked to use are my favorites, but I've liked what I've seen of it and the characters are all fairly well written.

Animated is supposed to be really good, so I'd definitely check it out too. I only haven't yet because of time and other things to watch...Also, I recommend eventually finding the Bee in the City live performance because it is amazing (although it is kind of reference heavy to pretty much the whole franchise).

And I'm not really sure about Armada...So! That's it for me, I guess.

The thing with the TF fandom is that theres so many continuities that it wan be really hard to get your head around.

G1 and Animated are the main parts to get into, they have the biggest presence in fandom. Beast Wars is amazing and id definately worth a watch. The Unicron trilogy(Armarda/Energon/Cybertron) are ok, I personally don't follow them so I can't big them up. The IDW comics are hit and miss but great for lesser known characters to shine.

As another anon said, TF:Prime is the current one so you could also watch that, which I really enjoy.

Also, about the fandom - There is a MASSIVE amount of fanon that is accepted as gospal truth. Some of it is good, some of it is bad, but at the endof the day, it's still fanon. Just be aware of that.
