Oh, uh, if you're worried about the 'stupid Sherlock Hobbit crossovers' I'm afraid it's a bit too late for that. There are quite a few of them already.

Why would that ruin the film for you, anyway? Just don't read the crossovers. It's not that hard to just scroll past them.

Apparently I'm a fandom killjoy too, because I was super-excited for this movie up until I saw this secret. It reminded me that the next 20 or 30 Hobbit secrets will probably be a lot of back-and-forth whining from both the rabid Cumberbatch fans and rabid Cumberbatch haters.

"CUMBERBATCH RUINED THE HOBBIT HE'S SO UGLY AND HIS FANGIRLS ARE SO ANNOYING AND I HATE ALL THE CROSSOVERS AND SHERLOCK NEEDS TO GTFO OF MY FANDOM AND MY TUMBLR."

"CUMBERBATCH IS BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT AND HE MADE THE MOVIE EXCELLENT AND I LOVE THE CROSSOVERS AND TUMBLR GIFS AND MEMES."

Et cetera, ad nauseam, over and over for the next few months until the hype dies down and the fandom goes back to being quiet and boring. That is my prediction.

I get that people disagree about his attractiveness in other movies/TV shows/etc., but why are people commenting on his looks for this one? Isn't he going to be Smaug? The dragon? CGI, motion capture, that kind of stuff? In other words, he's going to be a dragon face, right? We're not going to see his actual face, right? So why are we talking about his looks in relation to this movie?

What I do when fandom annoys me is rewatch/reread the canon. Also, stay away from annoying fanon.

I haven't seen many Sherlock crossovers yet. Of course I've seen some, so I'm not saying they aren't out there and there won't be more once the movie is released, but I don't think it should be too difficult to avoid them either. I don't really think there will be as many as people are expecting, but maybe I'm underestimating the fanbase. Either way, nothing could ruin my excitement for this movie (and yes, it's fandom too).

Meh. I actually eagerly await the totally cracktastic Sherlock/Hobbit/Star Trek crossovers.

But then I'm in fandom for the lulz and the silliness. Hint: If you don't want to deal with those people, ignore them. There's a scroll bar and dedicated comms for a reason.

I get really tired of the actor bleed-through crossover stuff, but...I just avoid it.

Even apart from the fandom, this bit of casting bugs me a little because... I don't want to be thinking of Sherlock while I'm watching the Hobbit. Not that fandoms overlapping can't be fun, but in this case I'd rather not be distracted.
Then again it's silly, because I can't have the experience I had watching LotR those first times anyway (which is what I guess I would really want), back when I didn't know any of the actors. (Hi Brett, hi Walter.)

You aren't being a killjoy because this is a legitimate concern. After all, look at The Dark Knight Rises fandom. So many people are shipping Blake and Bane despite the fact they *never* appeared together in the film, all because of the Inception fandom who shipped Eames and Arthur.

I am willing to bet there will be an abundance of Sherlock jokes in the Hobbit based on the together casting of Freeman and Cumberbatch.
