Re: How hot is it where you are?

I'm in Hawaii. It's been nice most of this week but it's really hot today. It will probably cool off at night, though... I hope you get to sleep!

That actually sounds pretty awesome! It's just that those sorts of things seem to be extremely few and far between, and MMOs just seem to attract the people who best embody GIFT. And it can be kind of difficult to sift through all of that to get to the good ones.

And oh god, multiplayer FPSes. Just. Agh. I can't even with a lot of the people you find on some of those.

Re: Turning in fannish things as class work...

When I was growing up, my mom was obsessed with soap operas. I watched a few of them with her, and I think they were actually my first fandom-ish type thing. I remember writing what was essentially a fanfic for one of them in middle school and turning it in as a short story. I can't remember what show it was for or much about what happened except that I think it involved a sinking cruise ship or something, but I remember I got 100 on it. :) I also remember using various soap characters' names when I had to write example sentences for vocab words when I was even younger. I was a weird kid.

This secret looks familiar... Repost of a really old one, maybe?

Do they still make Reese's Fast Breaks? I used to love those things but haven't seen 'em in a while.

As far as unusual things go, look for Japanese Kit-kats. 'xD

Re: Fitness? Possible triggers for people with eating disorders

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-08-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
beause I've heard stories of people losing weight with it

That's why I decided to start using it as an exercise tool. It really is good if you keep it up and watch what you eat.

I've tried other exercise in the past, but DDR is something I can do every day and not hate it. :)

Agreed!

Re: Weird question...

[personal profile] silverau 2012-08-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Seems pretty normal to me... nothing wrong with being upset by something in fiction that IRL would be very, very messed up.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
sa

And, yeah, I think it's his popularity that earns the 'forgiveness' that OP is talking about. It's just easier to love an evil Fantasy character than an evil Realistic character - in spite of all the reasons you shouldn't.
miss_yuka: Captain America from Marvel comics (Default)

[personal profile] miss_yuka 2012-08-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, no problem, always happy to share my limited knowledge with others :)

I don't think that's necessary true. I mean a lot of books keep the same writer for years thus keeping the story relatively consistent (e.g. Ed Brubaker on Captain America or Peter David on X-Factor). And there's always miniseries and short runs that are fairly self-contained.
I think part what Marvel is doing with Marvel NOW! is fixing this problem by deciding on a creative team and then sticking with them for a while so that they'll get really nice, thought-out, consistent story-arcs.

Weeeeeell, when I first read them (in my pre/early teens) I know I thought KKK before Nazis, but was onboard with the "definitely bad people" thing.
honk: (Default)

[personal profile] honk 2012-08-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
being born in a more fortunate position in society isn't something to feel ashamed of. you'd be better off appreciating what you have instead, because you're incredibly lucky. feeling bad won't change the reality of things.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
+1

Another difference: Because Loki is the villain in blockbuster superhero films, you watch all of his actions secure in the knowledge that he's going to lose by the end of the movie. Whereas with Walter you are watching him basically win over and over again for five seasons. I'll probably lose at the very end of the show, but it's a different dynamic.

Re: Helping parents pay off debt?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. You really are not obliged to pay off your parents' debt anon. It was their decision to buy the house and car, not yours. Your parents are grown adults, they should be capable of dealing with their own choices. Go ahead and help them, but don't sacrifice your own life and opportunities in the process.

Re: Discuss: boys also get marriage crazy

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I've told them in so many words, I guess, but I think I need to stop trying to save their feelings and be blunt(er). *sigh* It's not that I dislike the idea of marriage (although obv not keen on it with them), but it definitely isn't for me right now. So all of this has me wanting to flip tables and repeatedly headdesk.

Also, is it terrible that I look at all of the people around me getting married (and since I have a pretty liberal friending policy on facebook, I'm "friends" with a lot of acquaintances that are also getting engaged and married) and think, "Statistically speaking, half of you aren't going to make it"?

(And, apropos of nothing, but I've been lurking anon in F!S for a while and I need to tell you that I think your icons are pretty awesome. JSYK.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
The cancer stricken bald dude, to my understanding, makes and pushes dangerous drugs, contributing to the moral decay of a realistic world. He could be anybody.

The other's a butthurt Norse god with daddy AND brother issues who tries to conquer the world.

It's hard to compare or contrast the two frankly.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-08-18 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough OP (I'm assuming it's you) but I'm more worried about your mentality overall. It's not that world, but your feeling that way does suggest some serious depression.

Re: Baby's first ships

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2012-08-18 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was shipper way early on. My first ship was either Link/Zelda from the American cartoon, or Keith/Allura from Voltron. There would have been horrible, horrible fluffy romance fic if I had realized I didn't have to keep all those horrible, horrible fluffy romance fantasies in my head. Not that it would have mattered, I'm pretty sure the internet didn't exist when I was six, and I couldn't even read my own hand writing back then.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
The difference between spelling and math, though, is that it's really easy to check spelling. There are an infinite number of math problems and faces, but spelling in the English language is limited. You spell it right or wrong, depending on context and region; no partial credit.

And yeah, if you're not gonna bother to spellcheck when you're trying to have an insightful discussion? I do think you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Why does "my SO would rather do something else than spend time with me" mean "my SO's life doesn't completely revolve around me?"

It's possible that OP overreacted to something that shouldn't have been an issue. It's also possible that OP's ex was ignoring him/her (and for the life of me, I still can't figure out why some of you think that that is okay). It is, however, highly unlikely that the situation was anywhere near as extreme as you seem to have decided it was. You really kind of seem like you're projecting onto a secret that is quite vague and inconclusive.

Re: TW: discussion of pedophilia

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the exact phrasing, but it was something like "he has a predilection for biting children [implied: out of all age groups]", but you're not the only one who came away with the pedophile rapist insinuation, and it's kinda hard to tell with JKR just what she meant and what she didn't because she evades those sorts of answers because of the children/parents who might hear/read her interviews.

For example, the spells that Aberforth Dumbledore used on goats; it was insinuated that it was to, er, fuck them, but she said something about making their horns curly or something silly like that when asked in front of children.

Also, Umbridge and the centaurs. O__O I don't remember if that was ever asked in an interview, but no way is she going to admit whether or not there were rape undertones there.
