I never thought I was self-inserting when I wrote a couple of ace fics. I did my research by reading meta about asexuality before writing the fic.

And for the record, I'm bisexual.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's odd, most of the ace fic I've clicked on reads like it's by a non-ace person writing an self-insert about a fetishized asexual partner who just wants to service them.

Sometimes there is some preaching tagged on so they can pretend it's not just a fetish, yeah.

To each their own, I guess.

i kind of agree with you about the proliferation of labels though

This.

And even weirder, a lot of the fic featuring asexual characters I've seen being rec'd are usually porn fic. Which...yeah. Just weird. The few times I actually checked them out it was very "fetishized asexual partner" territory.

I am... not into this at all but... I would think that based on my understanding of the applied terms, porn in an ace fic would almost always be doing it horribly wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-17 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read a ton of fics with ace characters, but I've found a few of the ones I have read boring because it was more about the fic being a soapbox for How Asexuality Works For Everyone. Which is obviously untrue, as it doesn't work the same way for all ace people (or characters).

I find fics that do the same thing for queerness or transness similarly boring. I think sometimes it's people who hold those identities themselves and are really invested in their own narrative to the point where in order to have their narrative accepted they thing the way to do it is to press it on others as the only acceptable narrative. Although also I think it's often people who don't hold those identities, but have read whatever dominant mainstream discourse on that identity and therefore decide, "Aha, this is how this thing works for everyone! I will write a fic to Teach Others about this and lecture them about how deviating from this norm is Very Wrong."

(Anonymous) 2012-08-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
ia

It'd be nice to read an ace fic where the asexuality wasn't like...the whole point of the fic? I'd like if it was included but not a lecture. This also could probably go for trans* other queer fics.

and ugh to that last part, I hate that

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
Perfect response. I agree so much with all of this.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never felt that way towards fic about asexuality buuut a lot either reads like 101 course or fetishy and I can't read any. Self-insertion is harsh imo

Also I like labels for myself. It's a way to feel included and not so strange. So if I want to call myself a homoromantic asexual I will :/ it helps me and Idgaf about you.

The thing I don't really like about many fic that involve asexuality is that they're almost always "cured" of it by the end by the magic healing cock of their one true love. Can't they be ace and still be in a relationship? Couldn't they be in a relationship *gasp!* without sex? Or hell, maybe they do have sex but the ace individual doesn't particularly enjoy it. I just don't like how it is always treated like some illness that has to be cured by the end.

Honestly, when I write a character, I write them as the character and not as their sexuality.

+1 I see so much sherlock fic like that (and you're the person who likes ace!sherlock right? So I bet you do too. . .)

If the character is ace and ISN'T having sex, then it's made into this big deal in the fic too, like not having sex is this terrible thing, or if they do have sex it has to be this big deal. . .

There should be an ace sherlock fic where Sherlock and John start to angst and overanalyze the issue but then forget about it forever because in the middle of their conversation something starts on fire in the kitchen.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I want to read that fic now.

...actually I kind of want to write that fic now.

One of the few fics about asexuality (actually a small series of fics) I read and enjoyed was just like that. It wasn't preachy or framed the ace dude as broken somehow, he was just a guy in love who had no interest in sex. And part of the story was about making it work with his very sexual partner, and also about things completely unrelated. ~Like life~.

agree about the self-insert part. i'm not asexual, but i really like the idea of asexuality, so i tried to read some fic. they all read like after school specials on asexuality, clearly just the writers creating their perfect relationships through fanfic.

I've avoided ace fics because, like others said above, I can easily see most of it coming off preachy/educational or fetishizing an asexual character and having sex with them by the end anyway.

Eh, I dislike the labels too, but if I find one that describes me then it's a little comforting since I don't where the heck I stand on the (a)sexuality spectrum.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, this comment thread is a lot less wanky than I thought it'd be. Good deal, guys.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I can see where you're coming from in finding the labels irritating but there's a reason why they've caught on so much. They're tools people use to explore their feelings for others and relate to people more easily. They're a lot more personally tailored than labels like 'bisexual' or 'pansexual'.

While I'm not quick to describe myself as aromantic, finding that community was an incredible relief. Feeling socially defunct for not being attracted to people in a romantic way is common so it's amazing to find a whole group of people who feel the same way. The thing is, it wouldn't be possible without a simple word to connect those people. Once you have a tangible word you can understand and apply to yourself, getting to grips with how you feel about other people just becomes so much easier. Relief is the only way to describe it. What seems like out of control name-picking is more or less people trying to find more and more common ground and understand themselves better using self-explanatory labels.

Good luck trying to find better ace fic too - I'd really love to see that well handled some day.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
The best defense of labels I have ever read boiled down to "we use labels because things that exist have words to describe them, and when we give something a name, we acknowledge it exists." I wish I could find it again...

All of this comment ♥

I know that all the labels can come across for as a "LOOK AT ME I'M UNIQUE" sign, but they really do help with exploring yourself and knowing you're not alone.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Those labels seem practical, though. You can be sexually attracted to men and romantically attracted to all genders, for instance...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
The majority of the fics I've found annoy me just because it's like the character is asexual in name only. They'll say "this character is asexual" at the beginning, and then go into the porn, with zero discussion, or the slightest indication that the "asexual" character isn't really into it, or anything. It's...weird.

I don't think I'm asexual myself (although honestly, I'm not really sure what I am; the only thing I'm positive I'm not is a lesbian) but I find it interesting, and I wish I could find some well done fics for a fandom I'm into.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
SA

Also, I don't see a problem with the labels. I think it can get a little ridiculous when you get really, really specific, but I don't think there's anything with general labels like [whatever]romantic, especially if someone has sexual/romantic attractions that aren't the same. If you just have the one you could say "I'm gay/straight/bi/whatever else" but if they're different, being able to say "I'm homosexual and heteroromantic" or whatever the case may be is probably useful.

[identity profile] solo-by-choice.livejournal.com 2012-08-18 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, that's the reason I haven't written any ace fic. I just know I'd have a hard time not writing the ace character as exactly like me. I mean, I already project like woah all over Sherlock...

Also, all I want for Christmas (besides a Black Widow movie) is an ace fic that goes like this:

ace: "Okay so I like you a lot, but I think sex is gross and I am even less interested in interacting with your sexual organs than I am in, say, teenage Korean pop stars. I would almost rather re-read Beloved."

non-ace: "Wow, um."

ace: "I probably should have phrased that less rudely. I'm sure your penis/vagina is awesome. I'm just super not interested in it. Sorry."

And then they move on, at least temporarily, and go catch a movie or something.

Yeah yeah I should probably write it. Maybe I will.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
And then the non-ace dates someone who is not ace, because it's just so much easier and matching sexualities are an important part of many romantic relationships. Ace and Non-Ace stay friends and watch many movies together.

The End
