it was originally her own twilight fic with the serial numbers filed off, iirc

but cassie clare was blatantly stealing other people's shit so i don't think 50 shades is nearly so bad

I knew it was fanfic, but that doesn't make it plagiarism (inb4 100+ posts about whether it is). CC did a lot more than write a fanfic and then publish it with the names changed.

Eh, Icy wasn't nearly as bad. I mean, she wasn't single-handedly controlling the fandom, that's the big part, even if she did use them and then abandon then. (Plus aside from a few writing for writing I don't believe she ever got her fans to give her money.)

Also, I feel I have to bring up the thing people don't often mention about TwiFandom -- one of the main reasons the fandom is insane as it is is that it's made up of a lot of women who have never actually been in fandom and don't know how to behave. A lot of the fandom (and, it must be said, many if not most of Icy's most devoted fans) are actually older women with kids who came online for the first time to talk about Twilight. They come in with no prior knowledge of fandom, so they definitely weren't realizing what kind of a trap they were falling into. I once got recommended The Mortal Instruments trilogy on a TW fanboard, and when I said I wouldn't read it on principle, absolutely no one there knew what she had done.

Cassandra Clare evidently didn't know how to behave in fandom either, and neither did any of her enabling friends. It's not all about prior knowledge, it's also about whether or not you have any gut-level artistic ethics or not.

The ironic part of the Cassandra Clare debacle was that she was a journalist-so she should have known that she was plagiarizing, fanfiction or not.
