Real-world terminology in fake-world fanfics

So I got into this topic with a fandom friend a few months ago. She was really needing to use the phrase 'Stockholm syndrome' in a fanfic for Final Fantasy VII. I'm not sure what decision she eventually made on this one - it's doubly hazy because the FFVII localisation uses some real-world-specific terms (eg. 'Korean bbq').

Last night, I had the urge to use the word 'yorker' metaphorically in some non-real-world fic dialogue. This is just obviously a bad idea as all my cricket-related headcanons are so hilariously not supported by canon I don't even (I guess I just don't understand the idea of living in a world without TMS), AND it's specifically related to a real place but goddamnit I like cricket :( I guess not even the 'all fantasy characters are british' rule gets me a pass on this.

How much does this stuff bother you? I feel like the age and pervasiveness of a term has a lot to do with it - I wouldn't hesitate to use 'sandwich' in a fic for any setting, but 'Stockholm syndrome' is something I'd baulk at. I also worry about terminology related to an activity that is not present in canon, eg, sports terms (eg. 'knock [something] out of the park') or industry-specific metaphors, or accidentally using terms derived from high technology in a canon with a historical setting. Also, for writers, what's the worst one you've ever been guilty of yourself?

In those cases, I assume that they're actually speaking a fictional language, so they wouldn't literally be saying "Stockholm Syndrome" - that's just how it's being... translated, so to speak. I'd probably avoid doing it in anything I wrote, but that's how I would justify it when I come across it.

Branding is my major irk factor.

The second anyone goes 'Hey let's stop at Jamba Juice before seeing the new Spiderman movie!' is the second I hit the back button.

...On a slightly related note, the world of my major fandom involves clocks for hearts and time out of order so any time someone talks about a certain amount of time, like an hour or minute, or says someone's 'clock skips a beat' it bugs me because it feels like the author has overlooked the whole point of the canon... And I've had to rip out chunks and rewrite bits of my own ficcage to ensure I don't make the same mistake. (I never realized how often one uses phrases like 'wait a second' until a second no longer existed. @.@)
