I know musicians who practically eat each others' arms off, and it's more than often just grinding an axe as well. Musical schools of thought are sometimes just as cut-throat than religious schools of thought, or maybe scenesters just make it SRS BZNS. But God, Pullman is an intelligent man who has a problem with some ideas. He explores them and holds them up.
I loved the Narnia series, but also had some similar "errr...:/" reactions to C.S. Lewis' theology melting in. Why? OH GEE BECAUSE I'M AN ATHEIST. So, in turn, I loved the anti-religion bent in HDM.
C.S. Lewis could have written just as astute an essay on Pullman's books. It would have been interesting to read!
Not to worry, though, Disney signed the bottom line on two more Narnia movies, so we'll see the ultimate battle of Box Office Theoliterature soon enough. *grabs popcorn*
