The wtf secret is borked.

1. XD I love you!

4. Pullman's a good author, but the whole anti-religion thing really screwed up the third book, IMHO. Plus like you said, the whining doesn't really help.

17. But what about all the people who get wrongfully convicted?

I am so with you. I really liked the first two books of that series, and the third book just annoyed the hell out of me most of the time. I don't like having religion preached to me by my fiction. I sure don't like anti-religion being preached at me either. -.-

4. don't be ashamed! i'm an atheist too and narnia is one of my favourite book series of all time. it's just ... sigh, i can't even begin to describe it. ♥

and i never knew pullman didn't like narnia. that's ... wow, minus 1000 respect points, right there.

16. the really big dollfies scare the crap out of me.
katsu: (Clear up the mess)

[personal profile] katsu 2007-08-01 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. Pullman hates Narnia. I actually read an interview with him where he goes on about it before I ever read his books. Which really made me not want to read his series; the only reason I ended up doing it was because my mom asked me to. And I think she was disappointed when I didn't think they were better than Narnia. :(

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
omg yes ilu.

And everytime someone goes "WELL THEY SAY EDO AND ARU IN THE SHOW :D" I want to go into some lengthy rant about how it's pretty clear that the language of the setting is not Japanese, and it's simply being presented in Japanese because that's the language of the target audience, et cetera. If I read a novel that's written in English but taking place in France, just because they're speaking English on the page to me doesn't mean I'm not going to be operating under the assumption that they're really speaking French, and it's just being shown in English for my convenience.

But I suck at trying to articulate that argument and I'm, y'know. Lazy. :D

Re: 13

(Anonymous) 2007-08-01 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally grok it. They be of the English type persuasion in a world that DOES NOT HAVE JAPAN..... -=sigh=-

I can't stand when I have to 'deal with it' and others complain when I say Edward and Brother and such. I wish they get over themselves.

[personal profile] katsu 2007-08-01 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm an atheist, and I agree. My mother and I have even argued about it. (She thinks that Narnia ended on a let down because she's an atheist. I thought HDM's end was more of a letdown because I'm an atheist.) I enjoyed the first two books of the trilogy and didn't care for the way the third went.

And yeah, the Narnia bashing bothers me too. It made me really unhappy when I read an interview that was several pages of Pullman grinding his axe.

[identity profile] liferain.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
4. You shouldn't be ashamed or scared to admit that! Being an atheist should have no real impact on what you read. Heck, I'm an atheist and I read the Bible sometimes because I find it interesting and I think the morals in it are good. :)

19. Indeed they are! :3

[identity profile] morinzilion.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
13. I always felt that Amestris (spelling) in FMA was based on 1930's Germany, so I actually feel like they're speaking a German-like language (well English is Germanic) but that still means that I feel that "Edo" and "Aru" are stupid, stupid, stupid. D:

(Anonymous) 2007-08-01 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Please look at most of the shop signs in Amestris. They are in English.

9. I so love the fact that there's an Alan Rickman/Snape secret every other post. Keep it up people!

12. Aww

16. Lol dollfies.

17. There's really no absolute right and wrong as far as Raito's concerned. I think the bottom line is that he eventually lets competition and power get the better of him.

I know its a joy

3. Your opinion does not equal a secret. Just because you hate something means it's true. (I don't listen to them, I don't like JE stuff but seriously, they're popular for something.)

4. I agree Pullman really should shut his mouth but HDM is my favorite series ever. I have Narnia but for some reason I'm more pulled into HDM than Narnia. Both are great on their own. Pullman, shut up lol. You make your fans look like shit.

13. Fucking signed. Do I know you? ;D

16. What are those things called again? I really dislike them... they're so creepy.

17. I wouldn't. :/ Imagine punching somebody who's been pissing you off and living with the constant fear you're going to get punished for it? We'd be living with restrictions, as far as I believe.

Spoilers, highlight to read:

I'm not terribly excited for the first movie. Though I liked the books, I didn't find them terribly epic, and while the movies could have made them so, and tactfully, that doesn't appear to be what they'll do. Just the way the actor's speak their lines is terribly unnatural and dripping with what was doubtlessly supposed to be noble humility but came out sort of arrogantly, in my opinion.

3. Hmm...I don't really know what this fandom is, but you wrote "talentless" and then "trained to sing well". Contradicting yourself, lulz. XD

8. Amen, I totally agree with you. Books 1-3 were great, and it was so easy to sit there just such a thrill and a desire finish the page to see what was going to happen next, but it took me almost two years to finish GoF because I kept stopping. I just couldn't get through it, and one day I finally was able to tug through it when it got a bit more interesting the second half. OotP was even worse! I'm still on the first few chapters, and have been for at least a year. 8/ I'll be 30 by the time I finish the HP series, if ever. It just got so bloody boring after Azkaban!

13. ...Aja? XD;; oh god, what's with the "PPL", hun? ...and if this is someone else, oh c'mon. :P Who is to say that ENGLISH even exists in the world of Hagaren then? Automatically making English terms the default language just because there is no Japan mentioned is pretty hypocritical.

17. Well, you're certainly not alone. Even when he was killing "people just doing their jobs", I still totally agreed with him. :3 I don't care what it says about me, but I can never understand people who ever looked as Light as a "villain" of any sort.

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Re: 13, while I would agree that you can't automatically assume it's English they're speaking, I think the linguistic origins of names like "Edward Elric" are going to put you a lot closer to that than to Japanese. Still an assumption? Yes. A much more reasonable assumption than Japanese, though, IMO.

2. DN fandom: because we definitely read it for the articles are only into it because of the serious metaphysical/moral issues it raises. *shot*

4. I've not yet read Pullman's books (not so long ago the very idea would probably have terrified me, actually. . .given what I'd heard about their underlying idea, but now I'd be interested to look them up) but I was also sorry to hear him bash C.S. Lewis' series. Seemed unnecessary--even if you don't share another author's view of the world, you can still respect his craft.

5. *cringes at picture* Ouch. What movie is that?

9. I lusted after him all through Sense and Sensibility when everyone else seemed to be looking at Hugh Grant--now, though, I dunno. Maybe it's just hard to get whole reams of Snape images out of my head every time I see him now, or something. ^^

11. IAWTS. Say it loud, say it proud: I LIKED THE DAMN BOOK, AND WTF ARE SO MANY PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT? XD

[identity profile] halevy.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
4. I agree. I don't agree with Pullman's views (although I don't know a lot about Christianity because I'm Sikh) but it never stopped me from enjoying his series.

1. HELL YES. ♥

2. I used to be vaguely into the slash for Death Note, but it... really doesn't make any sense when you consider how asexual L is or how sociopathic Light is. But I still think it's cute if it's amnesiac!Light. Maybe I'm just weird. And this comment had little to do with the secret, but I'm retarded and tangential like that. And I didn't even address the issue of Mello and Matt as a pairing, but that's because I hate the latter half of the series. Oh well. |D;

11. If your friends really would think less of you for that, they're probably not very good friends. I mean, it's one thing to think less of someone because they condone some horrible, immoral act or whatever, but if it's just because they like a certain book series, then that seems pretty silly to me. Sooo... hopefully you're just being paranoid, but if they really would think less of you, then... yeah. And I don't know you or your friends at all, but that's the impression I got anyway. |D;; Sorry.

17. Awww, he used to be so fluffy and cute. And.. I wouldn't worry about that so much if I were you. I mean, hell, I still wanted him to win even after he started killing (relative) innocents, and that probably doesn't say much for my supposed mental health, but I have really weird freaking ideas about morals in the first place, so I'd ignore me if I were you. STILL, you have less to worry about than I do, I think.

1. YES! Totally! I'd love that so so much!

4. I'm actually the other way around. I'm an athiest, but the reason I like HDM better is because, for me, while 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' was utterly amazing, the other books just couldn't hold me attention. Maybe I got sick of the characters, or something. But Pullman's books have so much variety and so many interesting events, I can read them over and over again. Religion doesn't really come into it. I still love Aslan, though XD

#4

[identity profile] muse-mistress.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree (and I'm neither athiest nor christian). I liked the first few Narnia books, but the later ones sort of ran together in my head and I just didn't enjoy them as much. None of it had anything to do with the religious aspect at all, also - I had no idea that any of it had anything to do with religion for years, as I haven't really read them since I've started to notice such things. And I love HDM for the characters and the concept of all of the worlds and such. I read for the story, not the message.

And Aslan does totally win.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
11. It makes me sad that people are so afraid to like things because their friends are such asses about it. If they're really your friends they'll STFU and let you love it. Just as long as you don't talk their heads off about it, of course.

19. They are, aren't they? ♥ I'd say in a stuffed animal kinda way, but that'd fit more for Toad, Yoshi or Mallow.

(Anonymous) 2007-08-01 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
People who bash Johnny's incessantly are just as bad as those who are overzealous about it. Truth is, both good and bad have come from it. I'm not as big a fan as I used to be, and I know that there are definitely different tiers of talent within the agency, but you can't make sweeping assumptions about hundreds of boys and works starting from the 70s.
