Mulan can't be considered genderfluid?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No, she knew she was a girl. It was quite appropriative of her, in fact, to dress like a man just to join the army when there are real genderfluid people out there who are oppressed for you know what fuck it this isn't worth it

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
are you being for real with this?

not only was mulan an empowering character but she wasn't appropriating anything, unless you're saying that dressing like a man is appropriation.

DA

I think they were kidding. I hope they were kidding. But then I have seen complaints over women in drag in the army stories not making room for trans* characters that sounded very similar.

How the hell is it "appropriative" of her?

She wasn't doing it for the lulz, she was doing it to prevent her father from getting killed.

Is dressing as the opposite gender to prevent death off-limits now, too?

I like how you gave up mid-comment and people still ran with it.

2/10! You had the beginnings of greatness, and you blew it! :(

But you get a point for it still working on stupid people.

Wears mens clothes for practical, strategic purposes = genderfluid, okay. But then that gender umbrella thing does cover the whole world, so what the hell.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say no. She never self-identified as anything but female. She only dressed as a male because she had to.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm far from an expert on the topic, and I can't speak for genderfluid persons, not being one myself, but she never stopped thinking herself as a woman. She did not fit the social expectations of a woman in her time and place, but it didn't seem to be for want of not being a woman so much as desiring to remain independent and in control of her own life.

Even when she joined the army and tried to fit in, she never stopped thinking of herself as a woman, no matter how much she pretended to the others. You can see it by comparing her moments with Mushu and by herself and her moments in front of others.

She was so relieved when people started listening to her and trusting her as a woman, because she wouldn't need to hide behind the social privilege she got from disguising as a man.

Mulan kind of made a point of showing that she didn't fit in with traditional, wifely femininity OR with the world of "manly men" and for that reason it's really the only typical "strong female character" story I can relate to. Not that there's anything wrong with a female character just being more masculine and not fitting in for that reason, but the nice thing about this was that it poked fun at the ways that both traditional masculinity and femininity can be enforced in oppressive, restricting, anti-intellectual ways (like the fact that the men all attack the pole in the same way in the "I'll Make a Man Out Of You" scene, and Mulan is successful because she approaches it differently- uses her brains, not her physical strength), and idk, I'm not much of a tomboy so Mulan's inability to fit in with the men made it easier for me to relate to her.

idk, basically what I'm saying is that Mulan was about how traditional femininity values looks and traditional masculinity values strength, but Mulan valued brains and heart, and that's why she succeeded, which has absolutely nothing to do with the comment I'm replying to which means it's time yet again, boys and girls, for Katie to stfu.

I'm not sure if she can, but speaking of Mulan, wasn't there definite tension between her and Shang before he knew she was actually a girl? Because that's kind of interesting in this context.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I thought there was. Could just be because I was expecting them to get together at the end though.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
i was about to say 'no, not Mulan. But Shang on the other hand...'
