Aside from the obvious shitstorm from family values groups, the biggest problem I see is simply time. It's not such a big deal to draw different races, and have the character be awesome, and make your average Disney film. But to have trans characters, queer romances, alternative lifestyles, would require explanation and affirmation, and would cut into story-telling time. A princess who used to be a prince, who is in love with a prince from another kingdom, is just too complicated for Disney.

Right now it is, anyway. If we look at "the biggest problem I see is simply time" in another way, though, it becomes the time between now, and when "explanation and affirmation" aren't necessary.

Depends on whether OP's willing to wait that long, I suppose.

True. Because from where I'm sitting, that's definitely going to be a while.

We can hope. I'm sure when Snow White came out a black princess was nigh on unthinkable.

I think this only really applies to a genderfluid character. The thing with queer characters is that they could theoretically treat it as just a normal romance with a bit of exposition on what the world the story thinks about homosexuality/transgender people, but I feel like genderfluid is just getting too deep into gender and personal 'politics' to work into the traditional disney narrative. It's a completely possible thing to do in any other media, but disney's storytelling doesn't actually allow for THAT much. I feel like the way they'd go about it is making the character a mythical being, but then people would bitch about it.

then again people bitch about a lot regardless.

I don't see why such a thing would be needed with a lesbian/bi princess. Girl falls in love with other girl. Not much different than any other Disney romance, in terms of storytelling. They could even make it take place in a world free of homophobia, to make it easier.

But first they would have to explain that, unlike in the real world, it's okay for girls to like other girls in this world. And now that I'm thinking about it, they'd probably show affection for one another by holding hands and kissing one another on the cheek. Couldn't really do your typical Disney romance, or people watching it in the real world would flip.

Not really. If the romance happens and no one objects to it on the grounds of them both being ladies, than it's already explained. I'm not saying that Disney would do it, just that's it's not very difficult to do, and I really do wish that it would happen.

You don't have to explain anything. Explaining subverts the point, in fact. When nobody even blinks, the audience will get it.

See also: Melinda Lo's Ash, where for once, the dyke part was an utter nonissue. It just wasn't. That's so rare and I had no idea how much I needed that.

You're giving the average Disney audience with small, innocent children who must be protected from the scary world too much credit, I think.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that the audience wouldn't blink, but that the characters wouldn't.

Yeah, this.

Plus, who wants to watch a movie where half the movie is explanation of something-or-other that doesn't technically move the plot forward?

I beg to differ. A skilled writer can explore multiple complex themes in a short period of time. The kids might not pick up on it, but the best stories work on multiple levels, for multiple generations.

The fear of backlash from the Christian Right, on the other hand, is warranted.
