I don't watch MLP, but I edit for someone who writes fic for it, so I spend a fair amount of time on Fimfiction. I gotta say, I'm not seeing a lot of this crap that everyone says they see from the MLP fans. In fact, with one exception, I've seen much less of bronies behaving badly than I have of bronies posting crossover fics on other sites and massive numbers of commenters flipping out at the "bestiality perverts".(There is the porn, sure, but there's very little overlap between the porny section of Fimfiction and the rest of Fimfiction, barring the occasional Mature-rated parody fic that gets featured.)

(The one exception is the elevation of teenage!Spike to a sex god who reduces every female pony to drooling. This shows up a lot even in fics that aren't marked mature and don't have explicit sex scenes, and I'm starting to lose my patience with it. Still, it's not the only way Spike's approached, particularly when he's not the main character of the fic.)

yeah, fimfiction is actually relatively chill

a lot of it is in tumblr, deviantart, various random places (say, comment threads in f!s, big general forum places, etc.), soooometimes Equestria Daily too, the chans, youtube, those sorts of places

MLP does have a lot of nice fans, it's just that all that anyone wants to talk about is the gross porn or the weird bronies.

I think when a fandom gets a bad rep, that's all anyone wants to talk about. I see it with Supernatural fandom all the time where so many comments are, "Omg Supernatural fans are so batshit! They all like Wincest!" When in my (I will grant you limited) experience a lot of Supernatural fans are very thoughtful and funny and *gasp* many don't like Wincest.

The bad rep can have the negative effect of making normal people hesitant to join the fandom, but the nice fans are usually still there, they just may not be the most vocal fans or the ones you hear about.

There are a lot of really awesome MLP fans, but it depends on where you hang out online. I mostly just do LJ, so I don't see a lot of it, but I know which sites have it because people there tell me where to avoid. I'll have to check out Fimfiction!

I've yet to see bronies doing ANYTHING that I haven't seen 1,000s of times before in other fandoms. And yes, I'm including other "children's programming" fandoms in that assessment.

yeah, but few fandoms are as huge (in sheer numbers, I mean) and virus-like as MLP

the only comparable one I can think of -- in both numbers and "forcibly spreading to other places and fandoms" enthusiasm and obsessiveness -- is Homestuck

even Hetalia didn't spread as far and wide, and those fans are well-known for being obsessive and overbearing
