I just need to vent a bit.

[personal profile] szarburus 2012-08-27 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I made a whole bunch of gifs the other night and posted them on tumblr. Today I checked the tag and someone had reposted it with some random commentary underneath. I reblogged asking them why they couldn't have just reblogged it from me instead of reposting it, and they got all defensive about it, then told me I should have put my name on it (and yet they also stole from someone who had) and that there's no rule saying they have to do it, blah blah blah.

Obviously there's no rule, but it's generally a common courtesy that you don't steal other people's stuff, especially because you "don't like reblogging things". I know it's just the internet and it's just animated frames, but I was up till nearly 2 am working on those and I'd appreciate some credit, especially when it's incredibly easy to do so.

At the very least I am definitely going to start putting my URL on my future gifs. Perhaps in 72 point flashing bold font so people get the message...

Art/graphics theft is a big, big problem on Tumblr. So yes, put your own blog as the source and put your URL on your gifs, that will deter at least some people.

*hugs*, anyway.

I don't get reposting. It is SO MUCH HARDER than reblogging. With reblogging, you hit a button, you type in whatever tags you want, then you hit another button. With reposting, you have to isolate a pic, copy the link or save it, go back to the dashboard, create a new post, re-upload the pic, type in tags and comments, and post it. WHY.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
you know, I get finding a picture, saving it, finding it months later in your images folder and not know who made it but posting it anyway (in which case some people post it and ask who did it, which is something I'd like to see more often) because it's pretty or cool, but with a gif set? ...

I also blame tumblr's crappy navigability, although this is not an excuse for theft and not OP's fault by any stretch of the imagination, that makes finding specific old posts a pain considering how large some blogs get and the insanity that is keeping up with a dashboard.

I don't get it either. My infrequent .gifs are too sucky for anyone to bother with, but I don't get why anyone ever bothers.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I've done it occasionally (with proper credit) because sometimes Tumblr is being weird and when I try to "reblog" it just posts a link or something and I can't figure out how to get the actual picture showing so I just repost instead. Usually that's too much work and I just move along, but once or twice I've been stubborn and followed through.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'll sometimes repost rather than reblog in order to change the post format for various reasons (adding alt text, putting something under a cut, etc), but I try to link back to the original source whenever possible.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry. :( This is sadly nothing new on tumblr, but yeah, put watermarks/urls on your gif sets, always.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have this problem with my artwork, many people are kind enough to link my deviantart or reblog from me, but I don't understand the point of making a post with my art when I already have it posted and it's simpler to reblog? My friend is constantly telling me he is finding my artwork from all different sources that are not me, and if it's not even tagged properly it's hard for me to catch people sometimes.

And this isn't graphics or gifs, it's my artwork, my drawings, and I need people to know where my blogs are because the more exposure I get the more commissions I get. I rely on that exposure to help me make a living.

Even if my signature is very clear (I started printing out my name a while ago so that you can read my signature) I tend to get a lot more new followers if people reblog directly from me.

It's like come on guys, it's not that hard, just reblog and you don't even have to put in a credit link because it's automatically there for you.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
besides a signature put the name of your tumblr

my-tumblr | tumblr

somewhere that isn't easy to crop out or erase to get more hits on your tumblr

but yeah, this is all ridiculous and you shouldn't have to resort to desperate measures

it's like deviantART theft made 1000 times easier thanks to the format of the site orz

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I used to watermark but I stopped because I don't like the ascetics of watermarks and actually if you google my name, you can very easily find me. I may need to start watermarking again though.

I wish I could put a clickable link on all my images because I think that would be the only thing that would truly solve it.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think you can if you make the images clickable links in a "text" post, if I remember right, but it's more of a hassle to upload them that way. (The method I've seen is: upload each as images, viewable only to you, then check your tumblelog to see their url and use that to insert them in a text post. I don't know if that's what everyone does. It was too time-consuming, compared to how quick it is to post things on tumblr!)

That is insane, I'm sorry you have to deal with all of that. I know when unsourced stuff comes up on my dash, I always try and hunt down a link to the original and add it to the post.
I've seen so many resources for people looking for a source for fanart and stuff, and yet people still insist on not crediting.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
What irritates me more is when people put their own urls over other people's artwork. I don't see it very often but earlier today I saw someone post a comic and the url was for "something.memebase.com" and I was just irritated. I know sites like memebase watermark everything but that is not their artwork.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
and the worst is that if people are reblogging that post from other people who didn't add the source, then very few people will find out the original author -- just the ones that reblogged from you and the ones that reblog from them will. :(

tumblr reblogging branches in a very unintuitive way and the site's navigation doesn't reflect this at all, WHICH PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH

My friend makes a lot of fandom gifs and they get reposted...it's so much effort for people who just want a brief bit of satisfaction at seeing a notification on their dashboard. I'm sorry it happened to you.

Sucks man. That shouldn't have happened to you! :/

What everyone else says about watermarks and links. I actually love it when people do that, so if I want to post the gif anywhere the credit is already there; makes me feel better about posting gifs.

"Don't like reblogging things," is a BS excuse. That person just wanted credit for him/herself. The one good thing about tumblr is that it's easy to shame a thief. No one likes credit thieves. Just make your case, post it on tumblr and ask your followers could they please reblog it. Soon or later it will go back to the person and that person will either be shamed into taking your work down or blacklisted by the tumblr community.

You mean the copyrighted material you've chopped and changed?

Srly?

Get some self awareness, and be glad people are sharing something you've made that's entertained them.

I bet you think art theft is cool too

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like OP is asking for money, they are asking for a reblog, which I don't think is unreasonable considering they put work into making those gifs. This is not about who owns the copyright, it's about fandom courtesy.

Being "glad people are sharing something you made" is not an argument I like hearing either because it's an argument used for straight up art theft.

Re: I just need to vent a bit.

if we're gonna play that game, then most of tumblr should be taken down for copyright infringement; they are, after all, distributing a shitload of copyrighted material without the authors' permission

everyone reblogging or reposting those gifs? redistributing and reproducing material without permission

same with the videos

a lot of youtube videos too

warner bros could force everyone to stop writing harry potter fanfiction, what with the characters, locations, etc. being trademarked

a lot of users here would get in trouble for their icons of edited copyrighted material

and so on and so forth

also the

"be glad people are sharing something you've made that's entertained them."

reminds me of what people reposting art in various sites without permission respond to the original authors when they ask to remove them (which is within their legal rights as they own the copyright the moment they created that, say, drawing) something like:

"why are you complaining, I'm getting you free publicity!"

omg you are one of those persons, aren't you

you are the reason DMCA and all those ridiculous DRM protections exist

thank you

(except not really)

you are why we can't have nice things

That's not really a good comparison. When someone makes a graphic or gif, they're generally not claiming that they made the original photo/video. Just like I'm not claiming to be Christopher Nolan when I write an Inception fic. Even if there's no disclaimer, it's pretty obvious that it's a fanwork. And it's usually "marketed" toward fans of the original.

Posting someone else's fanworks without attribution can give the impression that the poster made them if they aren't upfront about it. Even if they are honest about the art not being theirs, it can be neigh impossible to figure out who made the original graphic without some serious digging.

There's also a difference between creating a fanwork of something, and distributing something that someone else made.

I think it's always going to be harder to get people to credit gifs than, say, fanart or cast photos because gifs existed before tumblr was around and nobody bothered with credit then, so people who have been around for a while still have that "gifs are to be passed around freely" mentality.

It's one thing if they claim to have made the gifs themselves (which I've certainly seen) but most people aren't doing that at all and it's quite clear that aren't when you look at their tumblrs.
