ME!!!!!!!!!

I was scheduled to finish this summer but then my husband was hospitalized twice, and it was very scary, and after he wasn't dying anymore, I just sat around and ate myself into a stupor and watched TV instead of working on my diss.

:(

But! I know you can do it, and I can too. *hugs*

Oh man, that sounds pretty horrible! I'm glad everything turned out okay! I don't think I could focus on my dissertation either after that, I would just watch pretty things on TV and eat a lot of cheesecake.

(Actually eating a lot of cheesecake is how I got through with my last semester)

And YOU can do it! Jump up on that horse! And then beat it to death - because that is your job when you are writing this shit,

Cheesecake FTW! LOL

What is your topic?

Oh man. It was bad with the cheesecake. I could get it delivered to my apartment with tacos. Worst/Best idea ever.

My topic is this Milwaukee, Wisconsin city and park planner and Socialist named Charles B. Whitnall, who worked from about 1900-1940. So it's both a biography (which no one has done) and a discussion of the changes he made to the layout of the city. I mean, if you want more I could go on and on about him how he started the first floral telegraph delivery service and other stuff too. But it's probably super boring to everyone but me and one other person.

What's your dissertation on?

Cheesecake delivery? OMG, that's like, OMG amazing. And dangerous.

What a very cool topic; I don't find it boring at all. Are you from that area? Is that what piqued your interest in his work?

My topic is on a Victorian writer named Ouida (pictured in the icon). I'm looking at social anxieties of the time period as represented in her work.

It's the thing I miss most of living out in New York (where I went to grad school).

And thank you. My friends are so sick of hearing about it, and most of them have no interest, so when I talk about their eyes glaze over.

I am from the area - I grew up in the Milwaukee area, and I was researching a Greenbelt town from the 1930s for a project, I stumbled on another project in the Milwaukee area which led me to Whitnall who was part of it. He's actually a pretty big mover and shaker in Milwaukee and people have done little research on him, so here I am. His son, Gordon, was actually a pretty important planner in the LA area around the same time.

That sounds super interesting! The Victorian era is such a fascinating time for me - all the social stuff, but drugs and doctors giving their patients orgasms was also bopping around. Is it an English dissertation? Or a history one?

It's English. And because so few scholars have written about Ouida, I get to do lots of close reading instead of unnecessary bloating with theory! Yay!

:)
