Is there anyone else out there fighting to finish a thesis/dissertation?

I working on my Master's Thesis and am having an off day of inspiration. Anyone else miserable like me?

I'm miserable like you. I'm so close to finishing that I can taste it, but it's so overwhelming that I'm finding it difficult to find motivation.

Caffeine is helping. Tea and coffee, mainly.

I need to do more of this. I am super close too, more than halfway done with my last chapter, and then I will be done with the first draft. But I am hitting this wall of DO NOT WANT.

Me, me, here!

I'm having an awful time because my motivation is zero at the moment, despite the topic being something really really interesting. I just can't seem to get up off my butt and actually work on it.

A good way to get going for me is to work at the library instead of at home, but right now I even have to force myself to get out of the house. Deadline is in early November and I still have like 40-50 pages to write...

At least you have deadlines! I have not great thesis advisers and bad self-control (So this is about 90% my fault). I definitely try and get out of the house and work when I can, and that super helps, but other days not so much.

I want to be done with a rough rough draft by the beginning of September. I have maybe 20 pages left, and I think I could do it if I really pushed myself. But it's getting hard to do

Motivation levels are low.

Introduction due on Wednesday.

I am literally more interested in the Mass Effect DLC than my dissertation right now (yes, I can be an adult and actually finish this, but geeeez.)

Ahahaha.While I should have been working on mine I played Fable 3 through...almost twice.

I know about the adult thing I should finish up a book on the History of City Planning, and instead I read four fantasy novels and a horrid romance novel instead. UGH.

YOU CAN DO IT!

I seriously think I had some sort of low-level depression my first year of graduate school. I had just broken up with my long term boyfriend, moved away from home and didn't exactly gel with anyone in my program. And then I fell behind when I had to return home for my grandpa's funeral. I probably should have gone and talked to somebody and to this day I wish I would have.

finishing up my master's was like pulling teeth. i regularly stayed at lab until 5am over a span of two weeks forcing myself to stare at the laptop and write. /o\ there was coffee and stolen tea. lots of caffeine and anger to fuel the scientific drivel.

and now i'm cramming for my mcat. can i join you in your corner of academic misery?

YES! Honestly, I think your lab stuff and mcat is WAY worse. Mine is writing about socialism and planning in Milwaukee. I like the stuff I read and a lot of the stuff is digitalized so I can do a lot of research from home, while watching TV

(this is probably a big reason why I can't get anything done)

But my friend did four years of Med School and just got done, and while grad school was hard, her's sounded about eight times worse then anything I did

Ah thanks. I definitely do this.

And while I before in my undergrad I wouldn't force myself to write - now I do. Even if it's crap, I at least know what I was going for and when it's super bad I write it in CAPS to know to go back to it and fix it.

But it's still hard. I hate writing poorly because I feel like it throws off the entire rest of the paper.

I can relate. Writing a thesis is like giving birth. Hang in there! You'll make it and you'll be able to hug your printed thesis like a precious baby, and it'll feel GOOD.

(I have a lot of feelings about theses, apparently)

Last semester before I start my master's thesis and I'm fucking terrified, particularly because they changed the requirements after I entered the program and now it has to be action research.

Not currently, but I was there... Holy crap, a bit over two years ago now. It will get done! If I could finish my thesis, you can too, OP! I do recommend finishing more than a week before your defense, though. And I suggest scheduling your defense for a Friday afternoon. Your committee will just want to get it done with, so the cross examination is a lot gentler. Or at least, that was my experience.

ME!!!!!!!!!

I was scheduled to finish this summer but then my husband was hospitalized twice, and it was very scary, and after he wasn't dying anymore, I just sat around and ate myself into a stupor and watched TV instead of working on my diss.

:(

But! I know you can do it, and I can too. *hugs*

Not at the thesis stage yet, but I can definitely empathize with the misery?

If I hate my department, office, field, and classmates this much eight months in, I'm not sure how much longer I even *should* do this.

Maybe you should try a change of scenery. I find it a lot easier to write in spaces with plants/trees and activity, don't know why :)

Ugh, don't start. I've been in graduation mode since last September, and in FUUUUUU mode since May I think. Not doing a written thesis (sort of did that already), but a design-thesis for architecture. Which means that if I'm stuck, I can't work on my introduction or conclusions, but have to stare at my sketching paper and try to remember where the water in my detail of new meets old is supposed to go. >_>
But I know that I'm done in the beginning of November yay. End is in sight.

Good luck! If I don't have inspiration, I will mark that (half a) day Find My Mojo day and just don't do anything. You need nothing-time to be able to do stuff again. :)

I'm currently struggling on starting to write my master's thesis. And I'm already mildly anxious because my bachelor's thesis was about half aninch away from catastrophe. Mostly because I took so long to get started. So yeah...
