If he can pull off the atmosphere that made this character interesting, I have no complaints. Then again, with the race dispute, I doubt anyone would have been happy with his casting 100%, regardless.

I know there are many race disputes connected with The Hunger Games, but what's the one with Finnick?

Sorry if I sound stupid. I just somehow missed that one even though I never saw any but white actors suggested for him.

Fan squabblings.
"Finnick should be cast as a PoC!"
"NOOO! Only WHITE people can be tanned!"
"Finnick MUST make a statement by casting a PoC."
"Given the physical description (bronze hair, green eyes, tanned) and hints about the culture of D4, I think he's probably white."

I'd have more sympathy for both sides if they weren't acting like petulant children. Also, PoC is a revolting term.



As for the casting- he's not uber attractive or magnetic, but he's physically closer than any of the fan favourites to me. He's sort of interesting, or at least less bland.

The tanned bit bothers me, because I've heard people say "it's tan skin, not tanned skin" and in the copy of Catching Fire I have, it says "golden skin". I've only really heard golden used to describe white people with tans or to describe Asian counterparts in fantasy novels.

Clafin doesn't fit my mental image of Finnick, but I'm willing to wait and see what he does with the role.

I hadn't heard any of this, not in the fandom, but I've read all three books and Finnick is definitely a white character. I think it would be fine to cast him as a PoC if they wanted to, but I assume that Suzanne Collins has some ideas of her own re the way her characters look.

I've read a bit about how authors write books to be cast for films. William Goldman has written a bit about this in fact. Generally they do end up going with the way the writer has described them, but as Goldman says, you have to be careful not to describe an actor too closely in case they aren't available, a lot of big writers who get adapted for the screen have been known to write with certain actors in mind.
