I still love Batman, but man GC is fucking brilliant :) You have good taste, anon.

Thank you! :) Have you been reading Snyder's run? That last issue kiiinda reminded me of GC so I loved it, haha!

Nooooo...I actually totally quit DC when the reboot came along. Not that I'm throwing a tantrum at the reboot (okay, I was, a little, but I'm over it now) but I just have no interest in getting to know a new fictional universe. All my emotional investment was in the old universe, so I can't bring myself to dedicate all that time and money and suspense into the new one. I'll probably check out the most highly-acclaimed stories that have already been completed in a couple years and just read those individually instead.

If I could have any adaptation of any comic, it would be a Gotham Central TV series.

Yeah, normally I bust out some pictures here and give a rec but... you set a high fucking standard friend. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm not sure I can find more, like this, and as good.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love some recs! I still haven't moved on. :\ I'm still surprised it's affecting me so much, haha!

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard that this comic is good. What is it about?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
it's batman from the POV of the gotham police - it's one of those super interesting premises that had the potential to suck super bad (i was side-eying it a little when i picked it up, like wow, this sounds like a plotty fanfic idea), but the writers stepped up and made the characters really compelling. it's also complete, so it's definitely worth picking up.

GCPD > EVERYTHING ELSE

It's true

I've never really cared for Batman books, overly, though.

All I can say to this is I'm sure there are other batworks you'd enjoy! So many years of material, anon! Though, that can be intimidating...

Either way, I hope it didn't truly ruin Batman for you, and you just convinced me to read this next! I think. Or at least after Young Justice.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hope you can read it as soon as you can! :D If you love character-driven stories, you're really going to love this. It's my first Brubaker comic and it convinced me to snap up everything he's ever touched, haha!

I do! And I've heard high praise elsewhere, too.

it convinced me to snap up everything he's ever touched

Wow, now that is a recommendation!

I've got nothing that compares to Gotham Central, but...

Batwoman: Elegy is pretty close. In terms of series, Batman: No Man's Land involves a lot of the GCPD elements (and a whole lot of Montoya. I'm pretty sure that story was the whole reason Two-Face targeted her in GC). The Tim Drake Robin series was good times.

Ooh. Oh, wait, I've got one:

Streets of Gotham. Dustin Nguyen and Paul Dini. Similar in the sense that it wasn't so much about Batman as it was about the lives of the people caught in his wake (there's even a short story arc about The Carpenter, a henchwoman contractor, that is one of my favs.) That one is DEFINITELY worth picking up (Doesn't hurt that Nguyen is one of those rare and delightful artists who always draws women as people instead of pin-ups. He had to draw Huntress in her belly-window days and managed to make that lousy costume look like reasonable athletic wear.

It still doesn't quite measure up because it's not the exact same--not building up extended stories in that Homicide: Life On The Street way that Gotham Central did. But it's worth checking out.

Gentlefriends, a moment of silence for the glorious departed, Gotham Central.

Thank you so much for the recs! I've started Elegy and from what I've seen it really lives up to the hype. I got into GC directly after reading No Man's Land , which I loved, and I'm having a terrible time getting over those two.

Will definitely look for Streets of Gotham! Thanks again!

All of these are beautiful works and I second the recommendations. Especially Streets of Gotham, which feels underrated as far as Batman discussion goes.

One of the oddest things about the reboot getting me into DC mainline comics is how I have been collecting all the old, out-of-continuity stuff. Including both Gotham Central and Elegy, which I love (though Elegy is still in continuity so yay! ... Batman books are weird about that but I am trying to just roll with it).

I've never heard of Streets of Gotham but I will put it on my to-read list because it also sounds awesome.

And I still have 2 vols of Central left to read and then off to look into the books with Renee Montoya as The Question because she is my new favourite character.

I second this rec. Greg Rucka is a great writer and what he did with Elegy and Gotham Central is really stellar. Maybe OP can check out some of his other works? For example, he also wrote No Man's Land which is my all time favourite Batman arc.

+1000 for Streets of Gotham!

For batfamily, Gates of Gotham is great. It's short with a really interesting style too.

I've also heard good things about Batman black & white but I haven't tried it yet.

GC was a brilliant look at everything behind the scenes in Gotham. I love all of those beautiful cops. <3

Is this like a Batman version of The Wire? Sounds like something I could get into.
i_paint_the_sky: (Default)

[personal profile] i_paint_the_sky 2012-08-30 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Never seen the Wire so I don't know about that. It's about the Gotham Police and how crazy things get when you're the police in a world featuring supervillians and vigilantes who dress up as bats. And it's just an awesome, gritty crime comic which has made me want to look into the "noir" genre more because I think I like it.

Thanks for the tip, OP. Gonna check it out.
