Honestly, OP, I think you're watching the wrong show.

I suppose in this context I'm using it to refer to the catering towards a particular brand of character meant to define innocence and naivety, whilst inspiring a protective instinct in the viewer - which is invariably tinged with sexual overtones.

Though such a base description doesn't come close to pinning down the exact conception of what I mean by moe.

It took me long enough, but I'm finally beginning to understand what Paranoia Agent was on about when it criticized Japan's fetishization of childishness. (Call me blind, but I started out by watching stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist, which doesn't really do the "moe" thing.)

I'm probably going to get shat on for this... Also, I'm going to be vaguely alluding to spoilers from the end of the novels (ie, stuff that hasn't been animated yet).

I didn't mind Nadeko's sexualisation too much, because that's kind of The Point of her character (someone who outwardly follows the childhood-friend-that-fulfills-pseudo-incest-kink-without-actually-being-biologically-related trope, and uses that to cover up for her more 'evil' (borderlining on yandere? I can't think of another word to use to describe it) true personality), and because she's above the age of consent in Japan (and any sexual activity with her comes under ephebophilia and not pedophilia).
Mayoi I'm not as happy with, but unfortunately I can see why they did it.

Admittedly, I haven't seen much of Nise, but I have a feeling that the incest might get the better of me.

Actually, the age of consent varies by prefecture in Japan, and just because something's legal in a country doesn't magically make it not creepy pedo bullshit. Jesus.

Kind of, but not really (it's pretty messy). The federally set age of consent is 13, and some prefectures have ordinances prohibiting sexual activity to/with teenagers younger than higher ages, but because they're just ordinances and not federal law, the penalties can never be as harsh as the ones for the federal prohibition of sex with children under the age of 13 (a maximum of two years, or some sort of monetary payment, whilst the minimum sentence for sex with a child <12 carries a sentence of no less than two years all throughout Japan).
Regardless... creepy? Yes. Pedo? You seem to be a bit misguided on the actual definition of pedophilia and are confusing it with something a bit different.

Sorry, I should point out why I posted that article, because it's largely irrelevant: the third paragraph is pretty much what I was talking about, and it's probably more credibly than the Wikipedia article, in terms of readily-available online sources.
