Re: "Masterpieces"... that are overrated.

2001: A Space Odyssey. The movie, not the book (which I haven't read). It was SOOOO BOOOOORING, I think I fell asleep, and the only part I remember is the bit at the beginning with the black thing and the apes. Which was better when the Simpsons did it.

Is the book actually good and just one of those things that doesn't translate well to film, or is it boring too?

THIS. Admittedly I was 10 when I saw it, but I have absolutely no desire to rewatch it. Apparently it's better if you consider it ~art instead of a movie... IDK.

I quite like the book (more than the movie, at any rate, which took sooooo loooong to do anythiiiiing!), but it depends on the type of sci fi you read. It does go in to a lot of detail (it's hard sci fi for a reason!), but the pace feels a bit quicker, I feel.

It really is a YMMV thing, but I'd rather reread the book than rewatch the movie.

I like the book too. I just don't think it adapts well into a movie. There's just so much detail that you can't show.

It's kinda why I'm wary about the Foundation movie rumor. Asimov's robot movies never did super well in the first place but like half of Foundation is just two or three characters talking. What they're talking about is interesting to read but reading/seeing/light is faster than hearing/sound and I can't see it make a good movie.

That could be iffy, yeah - I haven't read Foundation (bad sci fi fan!), but I have heard it's pretty verbose.
