"Masterpieces"... that are overrated.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry if this has been done.

But yeah. What it says on the tin. Only not just run-of-the-mill overrated thing, only things that are lauded as the Second Coming that you find overrated. Anything considered a "classic" qualifies.

Books, shows, single episodes, movies, comics, whatever.

Bonus points if you admit staying quiet about your confusion because you didn't want to look dumb.

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Alien." I couldn't even watch all of Alien, because I was so bored, and CEotTK just wasn't as great I was led to believe.

I did really like Jaws, though.

Harry Potter

I mean, it was okay. But I thought the hype was a little too much and some of the fans treat it like nothing out there can be as good.

Anything by Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore. Sure, some of their work is good, but I can't see any of them as "graphic novel milestones".

Gone With the Wind. I can at least appreciate the movie for the awesome costume and sets and the pretty good acting, but the BOOK. Oh god the book. I had to read it for school and I hated it, particularly since the only character I felt sympathetic to dies in the end.

I also didn't like The Scarlett Letter, but when I admitted this to my creative writing and lit teacher he looked at me like he'd suddenly lost respect for me, particularly when I explained my reasons as "I didn't like the main character." ("But she's a hero" was his response.) I don't know if I just didn't "get" it since I was a teen when I read it--which could definitely be the case!--or if I just have different taste than him or what, but I've been pretty hesitant to admit how I feel about that book since at the risk of sounding like I'm some sort of...misogynist literature hater or something.

Everything by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. Their stories are generally interesting like if I see a movie of them or something, but their writing is bogged down with purple prose and boring passages of time where the characters do absolutely nothing.

Doctor Who. Any of it. The premise again is fairly interesting, but the show just feels so aimless to me.

2001: A Space Odyssey. The movie, not the book (which I haven't read). It was SOOOO BOOOOORING, I think I fell asleep, and the only part I remember is the bit at the beginning with the black thing and the apes. Which was better when the Simpsons did it.

Is the book actually good and just one of those things that doesn't translate well to film, or is it boring too?

Evangelion.

Batman series like DKR, Long Halloween, Arkham Asylum, Killing Joke, and other "classics". There are honestly far better written comics (Batman and otherwise) than those ones.

Dune.

God I hated that book.

My fandom friends tried reccing me sci-fi classics, and every single one, I loathed. Stranger in a Strange Land, Ender's Game (well, it was tolerable, but not worth re-reading), etc. But Dune left a special bitter taste in my mouth.

The film version of A Streetcar Named Desire. I love the play, but I hate everything about the movie except Vivien Leigh. I have gotten into arguments with otherwise sane adults about this that boiled down to them finding Marlon Brando attractive and me not, so these days I tend to not bring it up.

This is kinda recent, but I dread the day The Artist is considered a classic, considering it bored the pants off me.

Anything by Tolkien, Austen, or Brontë. The writing is just...gah. Florid. I could barely get through The Two Towers because of that horrible Sam and Frodo walking across constant dull scenery described in painstaking detail part, I've never managed to finish an Austen book, and we had to read Jane Eyre in Grade 12 Lit and I absolutely hated it.

I'm not amazingly fond of Joyce either, but I don't think that's an uncommon opinion.

I don't get most of the mafia classics; The Godfather series, Good Fellas, Scarface. They just bore me to death.

And though I love, love the prose of the book, The Great Gatsby is a frustrating book for me. I adore how Fitzgerald can turn a phrase but, man, I hate his characters. And the plot or the lack thereof.

It's like if Shakespeare had written a play version of Keeping up with the Kardashians.

"These words are sublime but these characters, this plot...no."

The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, Moby Dick, and Black Beauty. I read all those books in the fourth grade and hated them.

But my all time book favorite of "Why do people like this?" is: The Great Gadsby

Movies? 300, The Corpse Bride, Alice in Wonderland. I thought the last two were nice and okay but not genius or anything.

Shows? Lost and Survivor (When it first came out).

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the movie -- it bored me to tears, to the point where I couldn't even tolerate letting it run in the background while I browsed the internet. It also seemed weirdly pretentious, which just annoyed the crap out of me.

I've never read the book, and as much as I hated the movie I doubt anyone could convince me to give the book a try.

Catcher in the Rye. I never read it for school, but as part of getting ready for the AP Literature test.

I made it about 20 pages in and was over it. Didn't finish it. It really is White Problems: The Book

Moved on to Lord of the Flies, which I found way more engrossing.

Lord of the Rings, both the books and the movies.

Avatar and Titanic.

Anything by Quentin Tarantino. Yes, Kill Bill has a lot of blood. Doesn't change the fact that it bored me to tears. Stop acting as though anyone who loves violent fight scenes needs to worship the bloody movies.

Batman.

Virgina Woolf, James Joyce, and Jane Austen.

Romeo and Juliet.

It left me with an astonishing feeling of "that's it? I was told this would be perfect..." But how dare I. It's just so deep. I really object to the idea that vague rules and open endings that offer interpretation are inherently more meaningful than the alternative. I know some people love surreal storytelling but it always leaves me cold. Idk, most of the time it just looks like the story is "deep" because people want it to be, or the writer is trying hard to be meaningful and people buy into that? Is that supposed to be the point. I don't know.

Nightwood by Djuna Barnes. The prose is supposed to be so poetic and great, plus it's known as a classic of lesbian literature. What it is, is unreadable.

House of Leaves. Insufferably precious, self-regarding, in love with its own cleverness and textuality.
