I don't think Utena is a horrible case of surreal storytelling until the movie. The movie is a piece of shit that tries way too hard.

The series is easier to follow, I can't decide if I love or hate it, I rewatched it recently and I think it's beautiful and I love the dark themes but sometimes it's hard to get through because practically none of the characters are even the slightest bit likable.
