Revolutionary Girl Utena.

It left me with an astonishing feeling of "that's it? I was told this would be perfect..." But how dare I. It's just so deep. I really object to the idea that vague rules and open endings that offer interpretation are inherently more meaningful than the alternative. I know some people love surreal storytelling but it always leaves me cold. Idk, most of the time it just looks like the story is "deep" because people want it to be, or the writer is trying hard to be meaningful and people buy into that? Is that supposed to be the point. I don't know.

The main story is a pretty simple growing up tale, the kind Japan is so fond of. Utena has a lot of references and shit, but getting them is not necessary for the experience. The reason I (and many people) love it so much is the character growth.
And anyway you'd be surprised how many people hate it, I don't think it's that overhyped.

I don't think Utena is a horrible case of surreal storytelling until the movie. The movie is a piece of shit that tries way too hard.

The series is easier to follow, I can't decide if I love or hate it, I rewatched it recently and I think it's beautiful and I love the dark themes but sometimes it's hard to get through because practically none of the characters are even the slightest bit likable.
